You probably have a filter being applied.

Look at the top of the main window, just above the image grid.
True, but the \ key can hide the filter visibility without disabling the filter. In Grid mode \ is a toggle that hides or reviles the filter tool. If you do not see the filers at the top of the screen, press \ to see if any of them are active.

Thankyou both, found it, must have set the filter up during a learning step and forgot.
all ok now, Lightroom can I assume add tags for more than faces, is that why people tags should be made into person tags, hope I explained that correctly

A "person" tag is a flavor of a keyword. Any keyword can be created or edited to be this flavor by checking the "poerson" checkbox in the create/edit keyword dialog bos. If you type in a brand new name for a person while using the Face recognition features what you are doing is creating a keyword with this checkbox checked. The main thing having this check box checked does is that for any individual image the keyword MAY refer to a rectangular portion of the image (a face region) rather than just pointing to the entire image. In addition, these already assigned face regions form a base set of images for what that person looks like which is used by LrC to suggest other faces as being that person.

So, yes - you can add keywords that has nothing to do with people such as a location, (NY) shooting style (motion blur), workflow state (needs-title), distributions info (sent to dad), subject (wolf), or literally any classificaiton or info you want to associated with some images.
