can't see subfolders, other odd behavior

This afternoon my copy of Lightroom2 lost its mind. I'm suddenly experiencing a problem, running the 64-bit version:

In the Library module, under Folders: I can no longer access subfolders for several of my folders. If I right-click on the name of one of the folders, in Properties it says I have 3 folders (which I know is the case: two of them contain jpegs in different resolutions.) But the arrow to the left of the folder name has a dotted rather than solid appearance. Clicking on that dotted arrow results in no action, as if there are no subfolders to access. I've looked in Explorer: those subfolders and the files they contain are still present. They're just not showing up in Lightroom. What do I need to do to restore access to all the subfolders?

Earlier in the day I was trying to move six files to the folder where they belonged. I had imported these six pictures into Lightroom as an early learning project - I'd done the raw conversions and generated tiff files from the raws a month ago in ACR/PSCS3, before I bought Lightroom 2. I noticed, after importing the entire folder into Lightroom last night, that the six files I'd already imported weren't showing up in the full folder. Again, Explorer showed them in that folder, but Lightroom refused to display them there alongside the other images made as part of the same shoot. Nor could I move them to the full folder. I got a message saying the files already existed in that location. This has something to do with the database structure that I don't yet understand. In any case, sometime after I'd tried moving those six files, the rest of the strange behaviors began.

I want Lightroom back to functioning normally! What do I need to do? I've got to be able to access all my photos.

Have you synchronised the folders Jim? Or Optimised the catalog?

I had already optimized the catalog, to no avail. But I just followed your suggestion and synchronised the folders. That did the trick. Thank you!

Now, please explain to me why subfolders that have been in place for a week or more, functioning perfectly well, all of sudden became invisible and needed to be synchronised.

Lightroom has crashed on me at least a half-dozen times since I first installed it a couple of weeks ago. I've never had such trouble with any other software. Could this be related to the subfolders going on walkabout?

Sorry Jim , I don't have any idea!! I do know that this release has opened another can of worms (bugs) with all sorts of unexpected and variable issues. Rest assured that a fix will be available before long.
LR 1 had dot releases to coincide with Camera raw and I assume LR2 will as well.
