Can't open from Lightroom backup

I am helping a friend who uses Lightroom 6 (I use CC). He has just got a new computer and has all his photo files as before but of course when he opens Lighroom there is nothing in the catalogue. We tried opening from the last backup catalogue which is stored on his external drive but get the message Lightroom cannot use the catalog named 'Lightroom Catalog' because it is not writeable and cannot be opened.

Any help would be gratefully received.

Catatalog backups are zipped. Did you unzip it first?

Then the drive it is on is not writeable for Lightroom. I get the feeling you have two threads going on about the same subject, so maybe we should close this one and only continue with the other one. Cannot open from backup
