I finally got around to trying the new "select subject" feature, and was pleased with how well it worked. But, I wanted to work on the background, and wasn't able to invert the selection.
After the selection was made, I went to the Edit menu, chose "Invert selection" and LR moved on to the next image in the folder, ignoring the photo I was working on.
I must be missing something, right?

Solution
The Menu item [Edit] > [Invert Selection] is for inverting the selected thumbnails in the Library Grid View or on the Filmstrip.
It has nothing to do with Inverting a Mask!
This Menu command would indeed change the image in the Develop window as the one your are editing would then no longer be 'Selected'!
To Invert a MASK either place a check in the [Invert] box, or press keyboard [apostrophe] [ ' ]
