Can't enter serial No. for LR 2 upgrade

Greetings

I have upgraded from Lightroom 1-point-something to 2.3.

When I started LR after the upgrade it presents a window with options. I select "I have a serial number and want to license Lightroom" and press next. The next window has the 6 boxes for the serial number. After entering the numbers from the back of my original LR 1 purchase box there is a big red cross on the right hand side and the Next button is grayed out. The only options are quit or cancel.

I tried re-installing LR 2 again to no avail. Any suggestions please???

I think you first need to enter the serial number you received for LR 2.3. It will then see that as an upgrade and prompt you for the LR 1.' serial number.
