Can't develop!

Hi everyone,

I am using LR 2.5 -(with one central catalogue) - my photos were stored on an external hard drive that I think has died (or at least the power plug has not sure being evaluated at the moment). Now I have all the photos approximately 34''' of them backed up. So to test I reimported the folder from one of the days that was "missing" in LR- the photos reimported fine- (i actually picked one photo- but it found all the other missing photos next to it) but when I clicked on one of the photos I get a message saying something equivalent to any changes in develop won't be saved (not quite the right wording) so I said ok- and then went and developed a pic anyway. (Seems to be fine)

My question is- in the event of the hard drive not being recovered (worst case scenario) do I just reimport all the photos that I have saved on the other drive into the existing catalogue-(which shows the files as missing- and because they are being imported from a different drive render that information as useless or do I just get rid of that original drive from the side menu?)) or do I start a new catalogue? I am assuming that if I start a new catalogue unless I saved modifications of my edits - then the edits won't appear?

I'm confusing myself a bit with all of this so hope some one can understand what I am saying here...?Sorry very hot here today.... :-[

Re-importing is almost never a good idea. In fact, it is an atrocious idea.

Better, reconnect the photos in Lightroom Library with the backed-up photos. Easiest way to do this is to move the backups to exactly the same folder path as the originals were in. If you can't do that, then use the Lihgtroom reconnect feature ... select a top-level folder in the Lightroom folder panel, right-click on it and then select Update Folder Location.

soRRY I didnt mean "reimport" I meant reconnect - what I am saying is I wont be able to move the backups the the exactly same folder path if the hard drive is dead...I think I am with you. :icon_lol: doh!

But, the closer you can come to that ideal situation, the better. The secret here is having your backup folder tree structure identical to working folder tree. Those of us who have been burnt before, or who have learned from someone else's problems, know to keep the working tree focused within a single top level parent folder, for exactly this situation. Re-link (Find Missing....) the top folder, and everything below it will fall in place.

Yes everything except the Drive name is the same....so I guess once everything is relinked in there I can get rid of the hard drive (dead one) in LR
