Can't close exported LR jpegs in CS2

I upgraded to LR2.2 and it kept crashing so I upgraded to 2.3 and processed an entire wedding with all those brilliant brush adjustments. Great stuff. Now I am unable to do any processing to SOME of the images in CS2 because I get this message:

"Could not complete the close command because of a program error"

I have spent the better part of 3 days trying to figure this out. I am going insane with this.

I am running xp with Service Pack3

Hi Verna

There was an old bug with CS2 and local adjustments, but I thought it was fixed. Just try something for me - export a photo with brush adjustments, and with 'minimize embedded metadata' ticked in the Export dialog - and then try saving that in CS2. Does it work or not?

The solution will depend on your answer!

I have 14'' images to rexport now!

Interesting, I really thought that one was sorted in 2.3.

Anyway, the cause, as you've just proven, is a little bit of metadata in the head of the file. Now, you can get rid of it by using the 'minimize embedded metadata' checkbox, but that removes ALL metadata, which you probably don't want to do.

Jeffrey's Metadata Wrangler is the solution. Download from here: http://regex.info/blog/lightroom-goodies/metadata-wrangler and install as per the instructions. You can leave it embedding all of the metadata EXCEPT the 'crs' blog which is the first under the XMP section.

And you'll be all set!

Thank you so much. You continue to be a guardian angel in my quest to produce better images for my clients. Why is it that I pay money to Adobe for a product that essentially puts me out of business for 3 days while I try to figure out how to adapt it so it works? I am now behind in my workload and crabby as all get out. It really takes a lot to get me crabby having raised 4 sons. Sheesh............ and I LOVE the adjustment brushes to pieces!

FWIW, the crs block problem doesn't affect CS3 or CS4 - CS2 is a few years old now, and I'm guessing that it's an unforeseen CS2 problem that would require a CS2 fix to ignore the new metadata, rather than a LR fix.

Thanks again, I don't want to sound too crabby. I chose not to upgrade to CS3 because I had to pay to update the entire suite and all I use is Photoshop. Is there a way to upgrade just Photoshop?

Eugh, yes, I've heard of a few people with the same reasoning! You might find it cheaper to find a copy of Elements bundled with some of your cameras etc., or buy a legit sealed older version of PS (i.e. CS or newer) on eBay and upgrade that.

But that said, now you have this workaround, it probably won't cause you a problem now anyway.

Hi Verna! *I think I recognize your name from DWF forums. Anyway I was having this same bl**dy problem. VERY annoying and I'm now behind and feeling like I need to pay $2''.'' to upgrade to CS4 when I really don't need it. Apparently if I like those brushes, I need it. Are you having problems with ShowIT web with these images too? I am. It won't import the exported JPGs that had the lovely brush applied to them. AHHH!!! I did the metatdata crusher and hopefully that is going to work, only time will tell.

Hi Cameron, welcome to the forum! I'm gradually pulling the whole of DWF over here.... :D

Yes, the metadata wrangler should solve the problem. The brush metadata is stored in the xmp header, and seems to cause problems in certain programs. Do let me know if it solves the ShowIT Web problems too, as that will be useful information.

it doesn't seem to be working in ShowIT Web, it says there was an error while sizing the first photo that brushes were used on! AHHH!! I think my "image processor" in PS CS2 worked after I did the metadata trick. If I upgrade to CS4 will it all be solved?

Cameron, try clicking the 'minimize embedded metadata' checkbox in the export dialog, and see if that helps. I can't guarantee that CS4 will fix it, if we can't figure out what's causing the problem.

Have you updated to 2.3 today?
