I have a Canon XT and recently loaded Lightroom 2.5 onto PC with Vista/32. I have been using Photoshop Elements 7. When I try to import from the camera I do not get any previews of the photos stored on the camera. The Show Preview box is checked. I shoot only RAW. Lightroom does import the photos! If this is of any consequence - my camera Communication is set to Print/PTP as selecting PC Connection does not work on Vista - Canon never developed a Vista driver for the XT.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to Lightroom forums Megadog!

Temporary copy from camera to desktop and import from there by moving to proper location.

Welcome Dog,

When you say 'No previews', are you seeing grey boxes in the import dialog preview panel, or some other issue? The grey boxes are often an indicator of video driver problems. If it's a file access thing, the most common workaround, as Denis suggests is, either using a card reader, or first copying the files to a harddrive location, via the OS.

Thanks Brad and Denis.

Brad - they are grey boxes in the import dialog preview panel.

I was hoping not to have to put another step into my workflow by temporarily copying to disk and then importing them. The import preview worked fine in Elements 7.

Would you think this is a bug? Or a configuration issue? Canon problem? I do not have another camera to try. Could I use this as an excuse to my wife to buy a new Canon (5'D perhaps)?

I think I recall similar direct from camera import problems with some of the Digital Rebel family. I've lost track of that series since about the XTi, or around the 3rd one, but I have vague recollections.

However, it still sounds to me like it could be video driver trouble. If you can't see the previews, but you can import successfully, I'd have a look at a) updating my video drivers, and b) verifying my monitor profile.

I'd save yourself the hassle and buy a card reader.

If the grey boxes are only in the import dialog, it's a camera driver issue. If the grey boxes are everywhere within LR, then it's video driver or monitor profile.
