Cannot import Photographs from C:\ drive

I have no problem importing images from card media...they autoimport when I put the media into my built in Dell Card Reader.However I have a large library of images on my hard drive...about 15,''' worth.I can import these in small batches the first time I open Lightroom after installing the program.However if I close the program and then at a later date try to import some images that I've added to my hard drive ( as in newly scanned Kodachromes) Lightroom shuts down and the program closes.Every time!...Help!

That sounds frustrating Jon! Well welcome to Lightroom Forums... let's see if we can help!

For a start, would you mind putting your system specs in your signature - it helps us give much more specific advise.

Now, you must Windows based as your using a Dell, which gives us somewhere to start. My initial thought would be to try deleting the preferences file, as it works when you first use it. You should find it in c:/documents and settings/your username/application data/adobe/lightroom/preferences/Lightroom Preferences.agprefs.

Also, what settings are you using in the import dialog? Are you 'referencing in existing location' or trying copy/move at the same time? And does it work with camera digital files - could it be that it doesn't like your scans?

It would help to know what settings you're using on import, cpoy to new location, import at current location, move.... etc.. Have you been able to import all your existing files or just a "small batch"? I think you can set up a watched folder in LR, can you configure your scanner to put its output there and automate the process?

When I first started using LR, I had my folder structure(by date) pretty much set up and just did an "Import at current location" for the entire My Pictures folder with no problems. There may be problems with import and moving files but I haven't used that feature so can't help you there.

System specs and details on your import settings would be a big help.

The following is from LR FAQ list on the supported files.

"What file formats does Lightroom support?
Over 15' native camera raw file formats, in addition to DNG, TIFF, and JPEG?in other words, the formats primarily used in digital cameras, and more of them than any other developer. In addition, Photoshop Lightroom also supports the Photoshop PSD file format, for enhanced integration with Photoshop CS3. For a complete list of manufacturers and models supported in Camera Raw, please see www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/cameraraw."

The above shows that LR only supports raw files from specific supported camera models. Make sure you are saving your scans as TIFF's or JPEG's. A member of the LR user to user forum had a similar problem when he was saving his scans as "Nikon TIFF" and nef from a Nikon scanner.

You made no mention of the scanner you are using or the file type but I am just thinking out of the box.
