Can you *capture the file numbers of selected photos*?

I am working more and more within LightRoom and going outside of it less and less. One problem has presented itself to me that I can't find a way round. Please help!

Say I have a wedding's worth of 5'' photos. They are all in LR and I have collected 2'' of the best of them in a RED filter ready to use in a slideshow. . . following so far?

I USED to then export them as jpgs to another folder and go and work on them there. One of the things I did was capture all the file numbers to insert in to an Excel spreadsheet to then print an order form for the client. . .

As I am now not needing to export to another folder - is there anyway to capture the file numbers of the RED FILTERED photos only?

I don't care if it is a workaround that you come up with - anything would be good.

The only thing I thought of was to export very small versions (thus taking no time or space) and then capturing the way I used to - but I would be very disappointed if there wasn't a proper way of doing it in LR.

Anyone out there?

Hi Don,

I have downloaded ImageReporter, had a quick play but am a little confused as to what I am doing wrong - am poking it . . . does it need batteries . . . what does it do and how do I get it to make the coffee? :D

Could you give me one quick pointer as to how it works PLEASE?

Seems soem one did have a solution to this posted on the UtoU forum. I though ImageReporter was it. Sorry.

You know, I'm thinking that the info you need is in the catalog somewhere.
Marc Rochkind appears to have some strong SQLite chops.

Maybe open a dialog with him. Perhaps you can come to some friendly/equitable solution to your problem.

Couldn't hurt to ask.

I'd recommend you check out the LR/Transporter plug-in developed by Timothy Armes. It can export a CSV file containing the metadata from the current image selection, and will likely do what you need. See http://timothyarmes.com/lrtransporter.php for more.

Think I know the answer, but for a friend I need to ask if there is a way to do the reverse, ie import a csv containing metadata from a collection of images into Lightroom.

There isn't...at least at this point. An import SDK would be a solution, but it only exists as a rumor at present. Just curious...how did the metadata end up independent of the images to begin with?

@jimburgess - I hope you aren't asking ME that question :D that is all a bit above my head I'm afraid. . . the solution is going to have to be fairly simple for me to understand it.

I think I am going to have to make an export preset as a workaround in the meantime.

It didn't use to be a problem when I exported as part of my workflow but I'm trying to get away from that now.

That question was for Patrick regarding import.

I think you will find that LR/Transporter isn't that complicated to use, and the installation is straightforward and well documented. Probably worth your time to investigate it and try it out since it will likely do what you need.

As I mentioned this question was on behalf of a friend who doesn't use Lightroom. Her IPTC metadata was created in an early DAM program (not sure which) and it doesn't write to the original image file - basically a picture agency management app without a graphics capacity. You create the info independent of the image itself; it's linked through the file name. She can output it to a csv or txt file, but can't attach it to the image file. I'll email her a link to this thread and see if she wants to explore further.
