I'd like to evaluate/test LR Classic CC on a small catalog before doing a full conversion. Is it possible to run both versions on my laptop? It doesn't have to be concurrent operation. Thanks

Yes it is. As you already have a subscription you can install the latest version (LR Classic) and retain the current version. Use the CC App to facilitate that, make sure you don't select the Advanced option to uninstall the previous version. It was inadvertently set that way by default, but has now been corrected.
