Now that I've upgraded to the paid version or release 2, can I delete this old catalog that still appears on my PC? The Lightroom 2 Catalog is the one I'm using. And the Lightroom Catalog Previews too?....delete those for hte old version? I assume everything that has Lightroom 2 associated with it is safe to keep in this folder....and the stuff without LR 2, delete it. Sound reasonable? (except for the backups folder)

Generally, yes you can delete as you've speculated, if you're happy that the conversion is complete.

Have you encountered any keyword problemswith the new catalog? There are reports that there are some issues with keywords in upgrading from 1.x. Apparently the keywords themselves, and the images they apply to are fine, but the export property checkboxes applied to each keyword are all cleared. Apparently there's a fix coming from Adobe, but it will rely on the old catalog for keyword info to fix the new catalog.

As a general principal, I would alway keep a backup of the original catalog somehow.

Thanks. I'm not sure I understand what the problem is you're describing for the keywords. I haven't noticed anything odd yet, but then maybe I haven't run into the scenario that others are using where the problem shows up.

Right click on a keyword in LR2.'. From the context menu select edit keyword tag.

Supposedly the keyword tag options checkboxes will all be cleared on keywords which were upgraded from 1.x. This of course, will impact how keywords are written in exported files. A minor matter to fix for 1 keyword, a major hassle for many keywords, particularly where you have different settings for selected keywords.

Ok, I see what you're saying. Then yes, it looks like I have that issue too based on your description (I just checked one keyword as an example).

When the fix comes out, will there be a way to convert the LR 1.4 catalog to LR 2 again?

I'm also in a quandary now as to whether to start using LR 2 (knowing I'll not be able to fix those keywords) or keep using LR 1 until the fix comes out (assuming I can convert the catalog again).

Andrew, could you clarify your question a little?

What specifically about the process is your concern? I don't think there's any reason for you not to be using LR2 because of this.

Brad,

My concern is with the bug you mention (keyword tag options cleared fro keywords migrated from LR 1.4). I can see that for my catalog. The impression I got was that I needed to keep the LR 1.4 catalog until the fix was out and then migrate it again. Is that not the case?

If I start using LR 2 for my workflow, won't I lose everything I do if I migrate the LR 1.4 catalog again?

Sort of.

Melissa Gaul at Adobe hints that the solution offered by Adobe will be some sort of run-once program that will read the settings you have applied in LR1.4 and copy them keyword by keyword to your already converted LR2.' catalog. I don't think a complete re-import/convert will be required. In the absence of a valid 1.4 source catalog, I think the 'fixer' will be re-setting the LR2.' options to some default values. (configurable? don't know)

So, have you made extensive changes to those keyword tag options in LR1.4? If so, it's probably worth hanging onto. If not, and you're willing to settle for the default settings applied by the 'fixer' program, then don't worry about it too much.

I'm thinking the fix will end-up in two parts. A program (real soon now) to fix currently broken 2.' catalogs, and then an upgrader fix incorporated in whatever dot.release is required to address freshly uncovered misfeatures :) in the 2.' release, which seem blessedly few so far.

Note, I'm reading a lot into a couple of short posts by Melissa on a thread at the U2U, don't bet the farm on my slightly educated guesswork.
