Can I go into the Finder (I work on a Mac) and change the name of the catalog and previews? Or will that mess up the file?

Yes you can! Give the same new name to both the .lrcat and .lrdata
From there, just double click the new .lrcat and Lightroom will open it.

This one was simple but if you think to come back for further help, depending on you question, we may need to know much more about your setup. OS version, Lightroom version, Web browser type and others. So, you are invited to fill in your signature by taking example from all the other members on the forum at bottom of their messages. When ready, go to the User Control Panel (User CP) link under the LR logo top left of the forums.
I have a problem pronouncing "nvw"... A first name should do fine in your sig
