Camera Calibration

Hey all... first let me thank you for all of your info. I've never had to register b/c there is such a great searchable database of info that all my questions have always been answered. Until today...

For some reason, I CANNOT wrap my head around the camera calibration. The 2.2 update makes a big deal about improvements to it so I figured it was hightime I look into it.

My understanding is this... I can get plugins from Adobe for my specific cameras and can chose them from the dropdown within the program. However, in my searches I am coming up with nothing. Am I doing this incorrectly? Or do I just manually make the adjustments and then save them.

Thanks in advance for the help for what I'm sure is a very elementary question.

Welcome, the profiles are included in LR2.2 and will show up in the calibration tab for the camera used for each file.

Hi DetectiveZito, welcome to the forum! It's always good to have another member!

Yep, that calibration panel in 2.2 is where you choose the profile you fancy - you've got a few choices, particularly for the camera style emulation profiles which basically make the file look like the camera would have if you'd been shooting jpeg instead of raw. They're very handy!

Thank for the answers, but that leads me to a couple other questions. Am I looking for a dropdown that literally reads the camera model, or when it says "Camera Standard", does it already know what my camera that particular image came from based on the metadata.

Secondly -- how come some images says "Embedded" and I can't change the setting from the dropdown at all.

It's clever, yes it does know the camera used !!:cheesy:
The ones with "embedded" will be non-raw files such as jpegs which cannot be changed as any calibration is already applied and written into the file.

1. I wouldn't bother - unless you want to !!:lol:
2. I have created a develop preset that includes a profile "Adobe Standard, Autotone, A touch of Vibrance, Clarity, Original w/b, and maybe some other settings and apply on import. Generally I have little pp to do now.

One further question you're bound to ask as a Nikon user:

There're a couple of matching profiles called "D2X something", due to an unfortunate/confusing Nikon naming convention, these apply to all Nikon cameras (not just the D2X).
It's just the name of the style, and is intended to apply to your D4' or any other profiled Nikon.

As Geoff says, if the profile shows up in the list, it's applicable to the camera that took the shot.

Hopefully to clarify...The left hand (Adobe) doesn't talk to the right hand (camera manufactures). Therefore most settings you make in-camera regarding colors (standard, neutral, monochrome, vivid, saturation, etc.) are not read by Adobe (or most other 2nd party softwares). ie. if you are using Nikon, the settings are read by Nikon NX but not most other softwares. The camera calibration setting in Lightroom is an attempt by Adobe to mimic what you may have done in your camera settings.... So in general, it doesn't matter a hoot what settings you have made in your camera, the software won't read it! Camera calibration is actually an extremely cool feature.

While you are correct about what camera settings are read, generally only white balance, to say that Adobe and camera manufacturers do not talk is simply not true, they do. At the moment they are just on different paths hopefully headed in the same direction - my assumption!!:lol:

Not talking is just a silly metaphore...of course they talk. They have been talking for several/many years now. Maybe they are talking different languages. There is no doubt that this will eventually be worked out, hopefully during my lifetime. The bottom line is that I do not own rights to the color data in my images unless I use Nikon software. I'm not going to get into a blame game, but it is not right... The path mentioned is indeed a long and winding road. And sorry this has wandered a bit off topic!

You all have been very helpful... I am constantly finding aspects of this program which I'm unsure how I lived without just the day before. This is one of them. I have added the "Camera Standard" setting to automatically be set during import of new images and 9'% of the time, I love what it does.

all right so back to one issue that popped up in here regarding the Nikon D2XMODE(123) profiles. I had several Nikon camera profiles listed in my camera calibration module and after my laptop crashed I wanted to reinstall the profiles back into lightroom.
does anybody know where to find these?
any help would be appreciated.

Hi douglas, welcome to the forum!

If you redownload Lightroom 2.2 or the 5.2 DNG Converter, installing either will reinstall the profiles.
