Hi - I know the book module is "challenging" and today's challenge is that I would like to select all photos used in a book and export only those as a catalog for "safety / backup."
Anyone know a way to do so? Without having to go one by one in a page layout and CTRL-click each photo.

Much thanks for sharing knowledge!
Jeff

1. In the Book Module, click Create Saved Book in the upper-right corner, and select the option Include Only Used Photos. That creates a special "saved book" collection.

2. In Library's Collections panel, right-click the saved-book collection you just created and do Export This Collection As A Catalog, selecting the option Export Negative Files.

The exported catalog folder contains the photos used in the book, all their develop settings and the book settings.

Hi John thanks for that. Unfortunately, maybe it's because of the stage of work I'm at (?) but I'm not seeing Create Saved Book as an option in top right nor in Book pull-down options. Can you include a screenshot? I know I have SEEN this show up in the past searching my brain synapses - I'm sure I've seen it appear somewhere in the right panel as an option but not there now.

Ah- during a brief test, if I want to create a NEW book, why yes, it indeed shows up as a CLEAR BOOK button and CREATE SAVED BOOK button. Sadly, though, goes away when I click into my already-designed and just tweaking for client book file...

but these go away when I go back into 'my' book I've already worked on.

;) things we learn for NEXT time!

If Create Saved Book doesn't appear in the Book module, that means you've already saved the book, and it will appear in the Library Collections panel, e.g.

In that case, just apply step 2 from my original directions.

Thanks again, John. Did your step 2. But it still sent my 309 photos that were in the 'book' collection - there are only about 80 in the actual book pages.

But that's okay - at least it takes everything that I had considered using out of the ENTIRE main catalog and makes a much neater / smaller file size file for archiving.

Did you originally select those 309 photos as candidates for inclusion in the book? I know there have been reports over the years about spurious photos appearing in the filmstrip in the Book and Slideshow modules.

Yes, I gathered images as possibles, then started working on book design, saving the book along the way. I suppose in hindsight that is an error on my part - But I just wanted to have images 'handy' in case client wanted to swap some things out.

I'm stumped and horrified here. Have pretty much lost faith in Lightroom / Adobe. I've come back to this project again to (I thought...) complete. But today's magical mystery greeted me with this Book layout.

...what happened to my book in progress? The layout is completely wiped. The 160 photos are in the filmstrip but both of my "book icons" in the left panel show a completely blank book with just the initial start cover/pages.

Hoping somewhere it is "just something I haven't clicked to display"

I fear I'm going to have to go back to the previously-generated PDFs that I sent for client review and Photoshop in the image changes and save the PDF pages.

Thanks for any suggestions.

I've come back to this project again
And how exactly did you do that?
If you chose the Book Module from the top menu then you have started a new book, that might explain the empty pages.
The correct way to re-open a book project is to [Double-Click] on the Saved Book Collection (with the book icon), or when you hover the cursor over a Saved Book Collection there appears an arrow at the end of the Book Collection name that [one-click] will re-open the book.

two book icons in my Catalog
And have BOTH of these Saved Book Collections had edits made to pages?

Hi Rob - thanks for the suggestions. This is likely attributed to the dreaded user error many of us are at fault for. Something we do isn't as the program was intended to follow for steps.

Here is a screenshot of the restored catalog left pane, in Collections. I have a Collection Set and my "book 2 test" book icon.

When I opened the LRC catalog, it was already in Book Module top right tab selected.

Hovering over book name brings up no arrow overlay.

When I: switch to Library Module, go back to the collections, hover over the book name, I do get the arrow overlay. Clicking it...results in same: empty cover and first page.

Really at a loss for this unfortunate occurrence for 4 Blurb books in progress.
Update 2024-08-02 is that I have gone back to last year's master catalog that had previous versions of the book proofs I created, and had to relink a ton of files that were backed up to external drive and have completed the books with much jaw clenching stress.

((shrug, I dunno... computers... can't live with 'em, can't chuck 'em out the window and get your work done))

Then this would suggest there are no book pages with photos added to pages.
[Double-Click] the 'book 2 test' collection and makes some changes when the blank pages appear in the book module- add some pages, or try Auto-Layout, then exit back to Library [G] . Go back and [Double-Click] the 'book 2 test' collection again- to see if your last changes have been recorded.
ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS Re-open a book that has been edited by a [Double-Click] on a 'Saved Book collection'.

Thanks, Rob, for your reply on that. I also just read your great reply here in this forum:
https://community.adobe.com/t5/ligh...-making-a-standardised-template/td-p/14437808

Well done! I learned a lot from that great reply.

But here I am again. Same problem a month later. I've tried to go back into one of the 4 master catalogs (previous version pre-final) and, from within the book icon (looking PERFECTLY FINE in the book module view, 45 pages and full of pics and pages/styles) and then when I select all pages and Export as Catalog, opening the resulting catalog shows the same old problem... a completely empty book of a cover and single set of pages.

It's completely flabbergasting on why this is happening. This "should be impossible" - opening one Lightroom Catalog to another and having the book layout just wipe like that.

I guess what I'll have to do (after having just watched, once again, the following videos...) is create a new book and then when I've finished, immediately right-click, Duplicate Book, rename as template, then select all images in Filmstrip and right-click Remove From Collection, and then use this end result as a template for making future books.
