why do I have black box "?" next to all of these folders? Users, anitabhala, pictures, lightroom photos, 2020, birds
 
I have taken care of 2020; however, I still have "!" on higher folders. I tried the "Update File Location" but wasn't sure how bc I'm not moving it... I read "Synchronize Data" eliminates all my LR work.

That black circle with the Exclamation mark (!) with the Pictures folder. is saying that there is a subfolder imported into your Catalog that is now missing/renamed in the file system. Expand. all of the subfolders under Pictures until you find one either the (?)
