The system drive (which is not the auto backup target) Lrcat is a few hundred MBs, the auto backup target drive (an external drive) Lrcat is around 1'MBs, of course, the photo folder itself is quite large (many GBs). My question is: If the backup folder contains thumbnail info while the photos folder contains the actual photos...what is in the system drive Lrcat folder of only a few MBs?

You should have a small lrcat - which is the catalog and should be backed up, and you should have a larger lrdata which is all of the previews, which isn't essential to back up. And LR's backup doesn't back up the photos, so you'll still need to do that.

Thanks for the reply. To Sum Up - I guess I misspoke by calling it the "auto" backup when I meant to say 'the daily catalogue backup'. As I understand you, that would be the smallest Lrcat that MUST be saved. The larger Lrcat , then, would NOT need to be saved from disk formatting (correct?).

Also, and on to a separate aspect of reformatting drives...can I simply drag and drop the LR application to an external drive to save it...or do I have to reinstall from the CD? I'm assuming that the Lrcat isn't a problem here and can be dragged and dropped to a separate drive as long as I resyncronize folders when I return it to it's rightful place and get up and running again?!

All this obsessing about detail is tedious, and I apologize for that. I want to be completely sure of what I am doing while reformatting the system drive. Thanks for your patience.
