I know several folks use Beyond Compare, and I recall trying it briefly in the past, but I cannot recall if it has the ability to find duplicate files in nested folders, or if it can only do a single folder to single folder comparison. I have a number of folders and older drives containing lots of folders and I want to try and thin out the duplicates. Just wasn't clear if Beyond Compare has this ability or if I should be looking at other software.

Thanks,

I use Beyond Compare on Win and Mac…. but not to try and find duplicates.

I will have a look at the App over the weekend. Hopefully someone else might have actual experience finding dupes.

Btw. Images may have the same filename but be different photos.

Well, points to Beyond Compare as they actually have a phone that a person answers. Unfortunately, they say their program is mostly a folder to folder comparison program. I am looking at other programs, but have not been able to pick one that is both well functioning and easy to use. I tried AllDup in the past, but cannot seem to get it to work this time.

I am not surprised by their answer.

Are you Windows or Mac.

I go to a lot of trouble to avoid both duplicate file names and or duplicate images,

Where I reuse an image in a different project it retains a unique image number, so I can use standard Lr grid query to find all occurrences of that image.

I thought there might be a plugin that might suggest possible duplicates.

If you use Beyond Compare to do folder to folder comparison it is very easy to see similar filenames and it is easy to exclude others so you are left with duplicate file names in both folders. This will not work for multiple sub folders unless they share identical sub directory structures.

What has caused the possible duplicates.
Will the duplicate images have different file names.

I spotted the app referenced by Cletus using Google earlier. It looks interesting. I would welcome any feedback from anyone that may have used it.

It makes reference to integration to Lr catalogs… but I could not find much info on this. Maybe looking int the wrong place.

I am on a Windows machine. The files I am trying to sort need to be renamed, culled and imported. They were temporarily backed up until I could find the time to do some serious culling/renaming/importing, but that time is not easy to find these days. I would, however, like to start tackling this, and deleting duplicates up front would make my job easier. There are a number of programs out there, but finding the one that works best requires a bit of time, so I am always open to recommendations based on personal use (like Beyond Compare) to help narrow down the possible candidates.

I have and use Teekesselchen. It works well and I would recommend it. Visual Similarity Duplicate Finder is new (to Me)

For duplicate files in general, I use https://www.digitalvolcano.co.uk/duplicatecleaner.html. Very configurable. For photos only, I select only file types NEF, DNG, JP*, CR2, WAV (For Nikon voice memos.) I limit the search to only my drive E:, to exclude JPGs that are part of saved web pages, on Drive D:

I am currently looking at this one and I think it may be the one I settle on - https://www.duplicatedetective.com/ . It has a number of safeguards built in, and all of the work I am doing on the files is taking place on copies located on a separate drive. If anything fails, I go back to square one and start over until I get it right. I will still look at a few other programs mentioned, so no final decision yet.
