I have a number of old photos that a relative scanned several to a jpg file.
For example:
EWW 1948001-temp.jpg

I would like to separate the photos, and I'm wondering what others have done to manage this situation.

I could import the entire file into LrC and make virtual copies and crop each one. I could also use Photoshop to crop each photo and save them as separate jpg files which could then be imported into LR. There are probably other methods as well that I haven't thought of.

How have others handled this?

Unfortunately, I don't have access to the originals to scan them properly, one by one, so I'll have to make due with separating the images.

I used to use the VC method, but eventually I found it a bit bothersome (can't recall exactly why, think it might have been related to face recognition, IIRC face recognition works - or initially worked - on the entire uncropped image, so I was getting hits from the same images that had been "removed" by cropping).

For the last major scanning project that I did during our first lockdown I used the PS method, i.e. scanned into PS, did the dust and scratch removal, cropped and saved 4 separate jpegs, then synchronised the folder into LrC and applied metadata etc. there.

Another vote for Virtual Copies.
Only ONE file on hard-drive. Each VC editable individually. Only Export, or print, when needed.

I think it depends upon the quality of the original and the time you have devoted to it. I like Jim's method of using PS to produce a cropped, cleaned up version of the original. With that you can also achieve some addition improvement by upsizing using GigaPixel AI.

If you just want to get the job done creating virtual copy of each separate image gets the job done. With the Virtual Copy, you can still that the separated VC images to PS for the cleanup work.

I would first consider how you think of the images. If the composite image has some significance as a source object (because of notes etc) then use virtual copies. That way you preserve the original and you can export the individual images as derivatives of that original if desired. If the original is not of any significance in and of itself, use PS to create individual images and import them separately into LR.

In Photoshop, go to File -> Automate -> Crop and Straighten Photos.

It does a great job (although not always perfect) of separating out the individual images.

Thanks all for your helpful advice!

@clee01l : Thanks for the tip about GigaPixel AI...that sounds like a great tool.
Do you have the rest of the Topaz suite, and do you find other modules useful? They are running a nice Black Friday sale right now (their list price for the whole suite is pretty high!). [I used to own a license to their suite, quite a number of years and versions ago, and didn't find it useful enough then to justify the purchase price, so I haven't looked into the current version other than brief peep at the website\

I too found the suite too pricey, I only owned DeNoise AI as a result. I got the same notice for the Black Friday Sale and just picked up the Suite (less the Video app) for a further discounted price of $168USD

I saw that offer as well Cletus but then checked and you if you want to keep up to date, you will have to still purchase the upgrade subscription. They don't mention that for some reason in the offer. ;-)

I don't see their sales model as that different than the old fashioned "buy it once & get free updates until we decide to call an update a MAJOR update for which you have to pay a fee" (usually discounted from the full price). The only difference I see is that Topaz is setting a time limit for free updates rather than tying the free update period to the release of a so-called "major" update.
