Best Develop Presets

Apologies, if this has been done before.

I would be interested to know what members think are the best and most useful 'develop' pre-sets out there.

To date I have used the std LR ones and WOW, thoughts?

This is a very subjective/personal matter, so no matter what is said it will be what works for you that matters.
For example - "best" for what? colour, sharpness, effect?

Geoff is right! The best ones are the ones we use most. Not meaning that they fit any purpose for someone else.

Point taken about being subjective.
I take mainly landscapes, dawn and at dusk so looking for something that will give me depth, rich colours as well as enabling me to bring our some of detail in the land when the camera has exposed for the sky. Hope makes sense.

Chris (is that your name?), you may be interested in this site. There are weekly presets and you can access previous ones also. I remember having seen there recently, presets targeted to your kind of photography.

It is Chris but there are loads of us, hence the '2.

I usually download the LR podcast from Killer Tips, but I had not spotted the presets, I'll give then a go.

I find that the presets on Richard's site are truly gorgeous. They are inspirational.

That said, I have to say that each photo requires its own consideration. Lightroom offers so many options and is so powerful that there seems no limit to the possibilities.

chris - I expect that your particular photos, shooting at magic hour as you do, need individual tweaking. The histogram is your friend. Experimentation is your cousin. Lightroom is your mama. If you have Ps as well you can add History brush and Burning and Dodging to your arsenal.

I would start with some of the presets from Richard's site, or Matt's site, and look carefully at what happens to the Lr settings when you apply them. Then set out to duplicate the effect without the preset. In the process I bet you will find something unique that you like for yourself. Save it.

I've been doing that these past few weeks and find that my ability to manipulate my own photos has really improved.

Hi Katherine

I have just started playing with the presets from 'Killer Tips' and I have done exactly what you suggest, use and watch what happens and then make my own adjustments. Interesting effects!

I have CS3 and have been playing with layers, but I struggle for some reason with Dodge and Burn, more practice maybe.

chris'2 - with dodge and burn you might consider turning down the exposure in the tool bar. I have always found that a little goes a long way when burning in. (in the Darkroom as well in the bad old days)

I hope this Ps stuff is not considered off topic in a Lr forum. I just thought it would be handy information for those who are taking a round trip out to Ps and back for final touch ups and printing. (which is what I do)

Okay, I'll let the rudder off a little and maybe bring in the jib. :) I think I might have been a little over the edge.
