Before & After

In the past I could swear that before & after (using the \ key) didn't always show the original images without develop settings and now I know it doesn't.
I have an image that if I reset is completely different to the 'before' representation. Does before & after just go to the last settings that were present when LR was shutdown ? if so how do you see the master without any changes and without hitting reset ?

By default, Before goes to the earliest history state for that file. For masters that's the import state, and for virtual copies that's the state when the VC was created.

But you can change that -- right click on any Snapshot or History state, and chose "Set ... as before" from the context menu. Now the backslash key (and the compare tools) will show that state as the before state.

That makes sense as these images have been re-imported and would still have the original develop settings in the dng. This would effect a lot of my images as I rebuilt LR and re-imported all my images some time ago when I had finally sorted out a folder design. There is no history from before the import so I can't set it back to the original. The before should mean without any adjustments or it's not a lot of use really ( I assumed snapshots and history covered historical settings etc.).

In Aperture you have a Master button that toggles the image between the adjusted version and the master file so you can see what it looked it before anything was done, I assumed the Before in LR was the same thing but it isn't. So Reset & cmnd Z seems to be the only way to that which is pretty clunky.

So do Reset, create a Snapshot, set the Before state to that snapshot, then jump back to the history state before you created the snapshot.

for 1''''s of images ? I think I'll leave it for now and just won't use the before / after tools. It's stuff like this that I find so disappointing in LR :'(

Let me ask a related question -- why do you care about what it looked like at import? It looked like crap, for sure. Your final version looks better. Isn't that all you need to know?

I use the Before view and comparison tools to see whether I like one approach better than another. But they all look better than the Import state, that's for sure!

I suppose so... I'm probably just annoyed that I was using the tool for the wrong purposes for the last 6 months :icon_neutral: I like to see what the original looked like uncropped sometimes also, but that has always required a cmnd Z so it won't take me long to adjust.

I'm not so sure if before should mean without any adjustments. What about the camera calibration and optional presets used during import? They would go forgotten if it would show without any adjustments.

I would like to see the original, even before the import presets (which I don't use). Calibration is a different matter as that is how the image is rendered from the RAW data and would have to remain as set.

cmnd Z works fine. I'll just have to get used to the way Before/ After works as I had assumed its function incorrectly.

Read metadata from files also resets the before preview. Try a test before you try this on anything serious, but you could reset to default, write to xmp, read from xmp, and then reapply your preset. As long as you haven't done anything different to each image, it could solve your problem.
