Before & After -- What?

In the Develop module, does B&A only compare vs. the very last adjustment? Here's the specific context of my question: I had am image that I was pretty happy with, then just for fun, I applied sharpening to it -- all of the sharpening adjustments except for radius. Then I did a before/after, and the difference is stunning, but for future reference I need to know whether I'm B&A'ing only the last adjustment (edge masking) or the whole set of sharpening adjustments since my last visit to LR.

I think the answer will be from adjustment to adjustment, but I'd prefer that it were the wholesale alternative since there other ways (history) to take one step backward. Anyway, it would be good to know the general principle, and I couldn't find it in Adobe's documentation.

You can choose any history step or snapshot to be the Before view -- just right-click on the history step or snapshot in the left panel, and choose "Copy ... to Before".

By default, the Before view is the Import state.

Wow that's cool... I was limiting myself to the Import state.. If a specific history step or snapshot is not chosen the After will the imported image with cumulative changes?

Yes the before will be the import state and the after the last change.

That's a great tip. And another one I rediscovered yesterday... if you want to update a whole set of pictures to show their current state as 'Before', but don't want to do it by hand on every picture...

Go to Grid Mode. Select the images, and hit Ctrl-S / Cmd-S to write the settings to metadata. Once it's finished, use Metadata menu > Read Metadata from Files. That automatically updates the 'Before' state to the current settings.

Thanks, that is what I meant, maybe it would be accurate to say "the most recent history state".
