beachball of death + first problem

In looking for a solution to spinning beach that comes up when I use tools on LR, I decided to verify and repair my external hard drives. Disk Utilty and CleanMyMac could not do it.
I've attached the error message. Possibly/More likely this is a Mac issue (?), but it doesn't hurt to ask.

Yesterday, I unmounted the discs. First Aid repaired one disc but not the other three.
Today (after the Mac was turned off all night), I did the same unmounting. Now First Aid is working.
