Not sure if I am missing something. I select a couple of images and enter info in the metadata (keywords, title, copyright etc) but only one image file gets updated, the first one selected. Is this expected behaviour or am I missing the blindingly obvious?

It's the expected behavior if you have selected the images on the film strip.
To have all selected images modified, you must select the images on the grid, not on on the film strip.

That's mostly right. When you're in Loupe view (one photo showing), then metadata changes and some commands (not all) operate on just the current photo. When you're in Grid view, the changes and commands affect all selected photos, regardless of whether you've selected them in the filmstrip or the grid.
