basic storage question

Is this right workflow? Say I want to download 4gb of pictures. I download them to picture folder on computer, then import them to Lightroom. I make changes and then export them back to picture folder so I can burn dvd backup. If that is right have I now used 12gb of my harddrive storage? If I have, which folders can I delete and still be okay?
If I delete individual pictures from the initial picture folder how does that effect the same picture in then Lightroom folder?

Never delete your originals. (That's NEVER) Not only is this a terrible idea using any software (has nothing to do with Lightroom) because you want to keep your originals, but also if you delete your originals then Lightroom simply can't operate on your photos any more.

I don't know where your 12GB comes from, 4GB of photos is 4GB of photos.

I guess the the 12 GB come from the following miss-understandings:

  • [li]another 4GB from importing to LR
    BUT:     LR does not copy the photos themselves, but only establishes a link from the LR catalog to the images where they reside[/li]
    [li]another 4GB from export
    BUT: First of all, as Paige sais, export is not necessary until you need the exports for something specific, and even if done, and done as JPEGs, they would take up a fraction (about 1/3) of the space of the RAWs.[/li]

First of all, he doesn't tell us if his originals are JPEGs... This can change our advice by much...
