Bad to reject images when they are Offline?

All my photos are stored on external hard drives. My workflow is done from my laptop. I noticed when I upload my images to LR and view them (Online) they always take a split second to get in focus or "pop". This is usually the initial view and once they have "popped" they seem to load just as shot once I return to the folder in the future.

My question: Is it bad to reject photos when they are Offline? Is it possible a shot can look out of focus when offline but would be sharp if the hard drive was connected and the photos was online?

I ask because I would like to work on my photos when flying or riding in a car on a trip. I may even do this from home to save wear and tear on the hard drive(s).

That depends JJD - if you've rendered 1:1 previews, and then the drives go offline, you're viewing a full size preview of the image, so sharpness issues will notice. If, on the other hand, you've only rendered Standard sized previews, you're only looking at a small copy. You can either set it rendering previews in the Import dialog or by selecting all in Grid view and going to Library menu > Previews > Render X Previews (X being the size you want, obviously....). And check your preferences for how long the 1:1 previews are stored, otherwise you could be throwing them away too soon.

No problem. Flags are only kept in the database. In case you activated "Auto write to XMP" there is still no problem as flags do not go in the XMP metadata.

I am looking in the "Preferences" under the "Edit" tab and do can not find how long the 1:1 previews are being stored option.

I made sure the rendered 1:1 previews is on.

It is in the Catalog preferences, File Handling tab, third line...

Thank you very much! This is a fast forum 8)

I bumped the resolution to the max & preview quality to High from Medium. Is this best? The default was 3' days which I left it at.

Is it possible to renew the "rendered 1:1 preview" another 3' days on folders that have expired (or going to expire in a few days) due to being imported several months ago?

Sorry so many Q's, but I really do appreciate the help :D

Medium/High: Slight color difference? (try). Speed difference? (try)...

Expired previews: Before going, just select those you want to work with for the next 3' days and rerender.

Even if you did go into Develop, preview quality wouldn't make any difference as Develop reads the original raw data (hence you can't do Develop adjustments with the files offline)

Here I was more thinking of getting similar color in Library vs in Develop...
Not of great use in this case I think.
