backup upon start quit working

for some reason my LR will no longer backup upon starting...check integrity has always been set and i did an "optimization" so see if that was some kind of an issue,but it didnt help........i double checked my external's connections to see if i had issues there, they are fine.this is only applicable to my laptop version install of LR. the pc will backup no problem.......the box comes up saying lightroom was unable to backup catalog do you wish to retry\continue\exit?????????....i tried each usb port to see if that had anything to do with problem it did not........this event just appeared from one startup that worked normally w\o issue to the nexttime start up that said lr wont backup catalog

When you say the Desktop PC backs-up OK and the laptop doesn't, what does the Desktop have to do with it? Are the two machines backing up to the same drive? Switching the external from one machine to the other?

When the backup dialog comes up, try changing the location it's backing up to. Might be file permissions.

brad, i have an external hd i back up to (i failed to mention the method)......i was curious as to whether the lr on pc had begun to fail to back up as well as i had the same identical recent catalog inventory additions to both machines and if one "just quit" ....was the other one identically affected as well...so i will follow victorias suggestion for change of location\file permission issue and see where that takes me.....
