Hi all-
Today I moved all my import backup files to a new drive. when I went into Lightroom and tried to synchronize the folder, it indicates that there are 4458 files to synchronize, but after only syncing six folders, it stalls out and does nothing. I checked in file explorer and all the files are present, but lightroom is refusing to sync them. Any ideas?

What do you mean by "import backup files"? Are you referring to folders created through the use of the "Make a 2nd copy to"

I don't understand. How are you able to synchronize the Import Backup files (Make Second Copy...) in Lightroom? These files are not used by Lightroom in any way and are maintained for reference in case you need to reimport for some reason after the camera card has been erased.

In the import dialog, there is an option to "make a second copy to". I had been making a second copy to the D: drive, but I copied all the existing files to a new drive and pointed Lightroom to that drive. However, when I try to synchronize the files on the new drive, Lightroom only does a few folders then quits. I checked the hard drive and all the files have been successfully moved there, but Lightroom isn't cooperating.

You do not synchronize anything in the import dialog. There is no synchronize command in the import dialog. "Make Second Copy..." is only used to store a second copy of your images that are on the camera card so that you can delete these before your system backup has made a backup of the originals that were imported into the destination in Lightroom. "Make Second Copy..." is not used any where else in Lightroom.

If this is not clear, then you will need to explain in much greater detail what steps you are doing to get to "Lightroom only does a few folders then quits."

I am sorry if I am not explaining things correctly. When I enter the import dialog, I tell LR to make a second copy to another drive (formerly the D: drive). Previously when in the library module, I would right click on the D: icon on the left side drop down folder section and select "synchronize" from the context menu. it would then synchronize and add any new imports to the list.
Today, when I moved the contents of the D: drive to the L: drive, once again in the library module this time I right clicked on the L: drive icon and selected "synchronize" from the context menu. It stated that there were 4,568 files to add, and SLOWLY proceeded to add their names below the L: drive icon. After adding only 16 folders it stopped (when in fact there are over 60 folders that should have been synchronized). Subsequent attempts yield no folders being added. Previously, when the folders were on the D: drive all the folders (and their import dates) were displayed. I hope this makes sense.

In the import dialog, All you need to do is tell Lightroom where the "Make Second Copy..." folder is now located in the "File Handling" panel. And proceed to import new images from a selection in the Source Panel (left side). Once these "Make Second Copy..." images are in place, Lightroom has no further interaction with that folder

Synchronise in the Library module is for importing New images to the catalog. It has nothing to do with any images that might be in the "Make Second Copy..." folder. There for a variety of reasons may be image filesthat are not in the catalog inside folders that are in the catalog. This is what "Synchronize" is for to pick up images that might be in a folder but not yet cataloged.

If your old "Make Second Copy..." folder was on D: and your new "Make Second Copy..." is on L: then it is OK to leave them where they are or to use File Explorer to move the image folders from D:\ to L:\

To summarize: The "Make Second Copy..." is only for a stop gap until your regular system backup app can backup all of your critical user files including the images that have been imported. After that it has no useful purpose unless you need to for some reason reimport images that are no longer in the catalog and are for some reason not in your system backup

The folders containing the "Make Second Copy..." images should never be available in the Folder panel as these are images that are already imported to some other folder.

As Cleetus says, the step of trying to synchronize the folder containing the images that were copied to the “make a second copy” folder is unnecessary. Beyond that, it is undesirable.

When you synchronize a folder, you either have “don’t import suspected duplicates” checked or you do not. If you have that box checked, your synchronization of the “make a second copy” folder should do nothing as all the images were already imported into your catalog when you did the import. If “don’t imported suspected duplicates” is UNchecked, then you will have two copies of all of your imported images in your catalog, and it’s hard to understand why this would be useful to you.
