I just moved to a new computer. The files on the old computer is messy on different drives. I was wondering what's the best way of finding all the files imported on lightroom to be transfered to the external hard drive.

I believe that I have to backup the following things:

-photos
-catalogue
-library

I know how to backup my catalogue since it tells me every time I start LR up, but what about the other stuff? This is start to get confusing because I haven't had time to organize my stuff.

Help would be greatly appreciated

Matt, Welcome to the Forums.

The catalogue and the library are the same thing.

If you're already backing up the catalog, you just need to back up the photos.
Since Lr organizes the photos by folders, it shouldn't be too hard to identify which folders need to be backed up to another location. If you right click on a folder in the Lr Folder Panel, one of the options is 'Show in Finder/Explorer' which will take you right to the folder that needs to be backed up.

If you can describe your folder organization with more detail, maybe we can make some recommendations about quicker backups and organization. It wouldn't hurt to include Lr version, Mac vs. PC. , those kind of details as well.

For a complete backup, you might want to save your preferences, and presets as well, we can explain that once we know what OS you're using.

Couldn't you use Lightroom's Export capabilities to make a backup of every photo? I guess it would take a while if you have a lot of photos, but that would prevent the need to search folders if the photos are widely scattered. And of course, you could start this process before you go to bed.

In particular, I believe that Export (I'm at work now so I'm not sure) has an option to export the original photo to some other location.

I don't have crazy amount of photos right now (12'' as off January 1st to now), but it's going to build up. I'm just worried how I'm going to organize this.

Thanks for the help guys. Greatly appreciated!

My organization into folders:

One top-level folder, and photos go into subfolders by capture date. Nothing more complicated than that. Makes backups easy.
