Automatic removal of saved backups

We should have the means of setting how many backups to retain.The program should delete the remaining backups.
We should also have the ability to backup while using Lightroom.

Of course it could be done. But really this is outside of the scope of LR's intended functionality. To be truthful, catalog backups are also outside of that scope. If it were not so easy to corrupt the lrcat file, I doubt that Adobe would have even included the backup option at all. If the Adobe LR folks felt the need to get into the back-up business, they would also provide the functionality to backup the images too. Backups really belong to the realm of system wide backups and are better handled by application specialists that can do differential backups and version control as their main objective. Would you want your auto mechanic doing your gall baldder surgery?

You cannot backup the catalog while it is in use. It is a database and there is no transactionally consistent mechanism in sql-lite to do this.

I don't think this would be practical because you can save backups in many different places. I save by backups from the lap top catalogue on my catalogue and also on my external drive and vice versa. It would be too difficult to keep track of what was saved, where and when.

Then, how many backup iterations are enough? I know, the last good one! But does anyone have a good feel for a legitimate number?

Don't know why, just seems like a sensible number.

5 sounds OK to me as well. In theory your catalog (if you tick the box) is verified as you back up so that should verify it as not being corrupt in any way so once it finishes you don't need a back up any longer.

While 5 might be just about right, I base my reasoning on a more important number. Master images backups straight from the camera card. My reasoning is that if I had to step back to one of the earlier versions of my catalog, I'll also need the master images that I might have imported. Now it is quite possible that these are already in the folders tracked by LR, but perhaps not.

I back up the catalog once a week. I backup the image masters 3 times per week. If I lose a catalog, I also might lose the Image Masters that are located on my Local HD too.
