Automatic Back Up During Importing Process

When I import files from a flash card, I've set the file handling properly and check the backup file and location. The location is an external disc which is on during the process.
I've checked the location and everything seems fine, yet I get a message that the files imported were not backed up!!
Am I missing something? What should I be doing?

Sounds a bit odd David. Do you have write permissions for that drive ok? What happens if you try backing up to a different location?
