Thought I'd throw this one out there in case someone else has heard/seen it.
First off, I have Automatically Write XMP checked on (my computer has no performance issues with it
). When I start up LR, it seems as soon as it decides that it is idle, the background XMP writing cranks up. I let it in the past run over night to write out the XMP for all 44K photos in my catalog and naturally it took a while but now I think this might have been involved.
I have a set of photos that I just worked on, developed, tagged, title and captioned, and flagged as Picks. I left LR in the background while I surfed the web, and my external HD where my photos/XMP/catalog reside kept chugging away. When I went back into LR, my group of 9 photos were in Grid view with the "Flagged" filter active. The "Metadata Has Been Changed" down arrow in the corner of the thumbnail was rolling through the group in a constant loop of requiring a save, then auto-saving and so on. Looking at the Metadata Date in the Metadata panel with one of the photos selected, the Date/Time kept incrementing every second like it was a clock!
Unchecking Auto-Write stops the process naturally, and it doesn't start up if I re-check it. But if I close and reopen LR, it starts chugging away again. I made a copy of one XMP file that it auto-saved and compared it with another auto-saved a few minutes later. The content is identical between the two.... I can't find any differences.
And, as far as I can tell, there are no differences between this set of photos and any other flagged/devloped photos in my catalog.
Ok, just made some similar changes to another photo in a different folder, closed and reopened LR. The Auto-Write icon flashed once on that photo and that was it... but the drive is still chugging on those others.
Tried a different tactic. I did a Windows search for *.xmp in my photo folder updated today. It brings up those 9 photos and 8 others located in 3 different folders. Some more trial and error finds that unchecking and rechecking Auto-Write on updates the set of 8 once. The set of 9 are all sitting there with the metadata down-arrow displayed (again, this is with Auto-Write currently checked). If I select those 9, Ctrl+S to save the data, it starts chugging away again.
Whew. Anyone have any ideas? Again, there's nothing remarkable about these 17 photos, the only thing that I can think they have in common is that they've had develop changes (flags/ratings/metadata are all different).
Right now it seems the only way to keep it from constantly updating the set of 9 is to leave them sitting with metadata requiring an update. Not really a problem since I know it's up to date... just annoying to have my drive constantly spinning/writing when it's not needed.
