Hi. Auto white balance seems to always go too cold for me. It consistently gives results with too much blue and magenta. Every time I use it, I then have to warm up the image a bit and change the tint away from magenta. Is there a way to adjust the auto white balance to consistently go a bit warmer with tint a little more towards green?

LR 1.4.1
ACR 4.4.1
Canon 5D

Set a WB preset that you can apply on import. But first you need to find a result you want.

I would say that the auto WB is crude method to achieve a desired result.

Have you tried the WB drop tool. I find if i 'auto' first and then apply the tool to a part of the image that would be considered neutral i get better results. (Not always great for tungstan or event images with high ISO though)

The power of LR is to play with the different methods available and find what you like. Auto will never get you there, no matter what converter you use.

Also, i see you use a 5D. Try the new calibration preset for your images and you will see a distinct difference in the rendering. Maybe this is the issue, rather than just the WB.

oh, and welcome to the forums....how rude of me.

when i saw your signature i figured you were not a new member:roll:

I too find my white balance auto settings to be a little cool, with both of my cameras. Maybe some day they will implement relative adjustments so we could just add a preset of, say, 2'' degrees to the temp of everything we import. I have put in a feature request but....

Thank you both. Brad, how do I get that 5D calibration preset and what do I do with it?

p.s.- thanks for the warm welcome.

Sue, look here:

http://http://labs.adobe.com/wiki/index.php/DNG_Profiles

A common complaint with earlier versions of LR, was the 'look' of color renderings of the standard Adobe provided camera profiles. This beta release of camera profiles is widely thought to be much 'better'. In addition Adobe has provided an Editor application to allow users to 'roll their own'.

I believe installation instructions and everything needed are at that site.

I have actually found that the White Balance Selector stays warm for me most of the time, but not all the time. I think automation above is good, but also know that the tone selected has a lot to do with the White Balance outcome.

I wrote an article here on using the WBS, http://outdoorimages.blogspot.com/2''8/'8/lightroom-tip18-white-balance-selector.html

If you view it, notice the grid provided to select the neutral tone for balancing. In writing this article I found some information on the adobe site (forgot to save the link!), but my memory was that they suggested we use a 'light' neutral tone. This implied to me not quite neutral, but a lighter hue.

Nice article. I see you choose 5'% for the values.

I seem to recall hearing that it is important when choosing where to apply the WBS, not to go too high or too low, and the ideal would be around 7'%, as it has an adverse affect on the tonality of the image. (vague reference is jeff schewe in LL tutorials - but would have to go back and check)

Anyone shed more light!
