Having imported an image as a DNG file and adjusting various controls to suit, if the Apply auto tone adjustments checkbox is set in the Default Develop Presets section of the Preset Preferences, when I export a Tiff to the original folder and stack with the original, an auto tone pass is made on the Tiff and it is obviously different from the original DNG.

Is this expected and desired behavior?

It was certainly a source of considerable consternation when it started to happen.

Not the best behaviour, we really need presets by file types, try importing raw+jpeg side by side with a preset !#@#@@
Not a good look - add a feature request on the tool bar at the top of this page please.

Do you have auto tone set in the default Preset? It shouldn't apply unless you have set it.

As for the differences, Auto tone works on the files individually, irrespective of file type. I just don't think it's much good.

This whole concept of presets by file types baffles me. The only controls that actually are different are White Balance, Recovery and Fill Light, none of which are used in the Autotone algorithm as far as I've seen.

Thanks for the replies.

I have auto tone set in my import presets as it provides a reasonable starting point for tonal range. In almost or, perhaps, every, image, the auto settings are modified. Auto tone allows me to tweak the settings, usually fill light and blacks.
