Auto stack from RAW to JPG after photoshop

Hey there
i just downloaded the new beta
and ther is something i can't get my head around
I shoot in Raw :) and when i edit the photos i normally save them in JPG
LR exports them in PSD that is very fine, but how can i get it to auto stack and auto sync my folder all the time
like in Aperture.
i have to go in and sync then stack with time, is there a better way.
i dont want to first save them in PSD and then Export them to JPG before uploading to my web page
i just takes to much space, i have 1'''' plus pictures and i need to keep track of them :)
any one with the same problem

Hello, and welcome!

First of all, I have to confess that I'm a little confused by your terminology, especially when you say "I normally save them in JPG" and then "LR Exports them in PSD"....to my mind "save" and "export" are the same thing, as LR is a non-destructive editor (the original file is not overwritten, or "saved") and simply records adjustments in its database (the catalog). To apply those adjustments into a 'saved' file it is necessary to use the 'export' function. And when using the export function LR gives you the ability to create either a JPG, TIFF, PSD, or DNG 'copy'....so you CAN create Jpegs directly using LR without having to create PSDs first.

As to stacking....the export dialog box gives you the ability to create a jpeg AND add it to the catalog (so no need to re-import) PLUS (caveat is as long as you accept that it gets written to the same folder as the original RAW file) LR will allow you to stack it with the original (choice of stacking before or after). No need to use auto stack or auto sync, it's all achieved during the one export dialog.

Of course if you need to go into Photoshop for further editing, before creating the jpeg, use the LR "edit in Photoshop" function (TIFF or PSD), finish/save in Photoshop then back in LR use the export process on the TIFF/PSD to create the jpeg with the stack option as above. Then you would end up in the Library with the original RAW file, next to it would be a stack containing the TIFF/PSD edited file and its exported JPG.

Does that help with what you are trying to achieve?

Sorry i din not get my coffe this morning :)
my work flow is like this
i import :) adjust in lr then go to photoshop to ad frame ect and then i save them in JPEG
but this way LR don't stack the images i have to sync the folder.
if i want to get the stacked version i have to create a psd file then there is no problem, but in order to upload them i have export them to Jpeg!!!
i some times make 1' versions of the same photo, BW with frame with out frame ect.
that is 4'' MB of photos!!!!
and i would like to save in ps to jpeg and LR to stack them for me

make any sense

the best way for me was to set the external editing not psd or Tiff but JPeg but LR don't cant do that

OK, now I understand and see the problem. Don't have a solution, however, as that's not the way I work (as a pure hobbyist). Can't help with the space issues of multiple PSDs, but I do wonder at the value of re-importing the saved jpegs to be stacked with the original raw file. Very many folks on the Forum would probably say "don't bother"....the jpeg's only purpose in this situation seems to be to facilitate uploading to the web. Once that's done it serves no real purpose, so just delete it! You can easily recreate it at any point in the future, but for now all it seems to be doing is giving you a stacking headache. Of course, you may well have a very valid reason for trying to stack the jpeg with the original which I'm just not seeing....so no offence meant. :D

In the "Preferences" dialog box, "Import" tab, do you have a check-mark in front of "Treat JPEG files next to raw files as separate photos"? If you tick it, can you stack them now?

You don't need to save the jpegs. Just create virtual copies and develop the images as you like. Then export the jpegs only when you need them (delete them when finished). This uses practically no disk space.

Hey Subsea, welcome to the forum!

Hang on, go back a stage... Just explain your workflow at the moment? It sounds like you're dealing with fairly large volumes if you're ending up with 4''mb of files. Are you using Edit in PS or Export? And which version of PS? We may be able to find you a better solution if you're like to tell us a bit more.

Okay my work flow is
i shoot then i import then to lr3
i do my adjustmens and then go to ps to ad frame ect
i ps i save them in jpeg so that they are ready for the Web
but Many time i use the same photo 4-1' times bw Black frame ect
so every time i export from lr to ps is it psd format
i know i could just re- use the photo and then save it to jpg every time
and that i do but if i have 5' photos to edit that is 5' x 34 mb that is a lot of space
i still use aperutur 2 and here i Can send it to ps and same them in jpeg and it automatic stacked to the raw file so here. I have the raw photo and 3-2' jpeg stacked
what would like to here is there a Way to get lr to do the same so i dont have. 5' raw files and 5' psd plus 1''-3'' jpegs
