ive been having trouble shooting tethered using the auto import function. some of that is related to what i believe is the firewire port becoming loose on my camera (an eyefi card might be my solution for that), but ive also discovered that auto import isnt working on my master catalog on my i7 imac.
here is the process thats gotten me this far and what ive learned.
one night i was testing my camera to make sure pictures were even getting from it, to the computer. no problem there (i had a good connection and wasnt moving around). so based on that i established that it wasnt the cameras fault, something on the computer was not working right.
so i took the camera out of the equation and just started snagging pictures off the internet to put into my watched folder. here is the message i would get every time there was an error...which is all the time.
"some import actions were not performed. could not move a file to the requested location"
so, auto import on my master catalog doesnt work on my i7 imac. what about my 15" mbp, since i had that first and thats what i started shooting tethered with...
so i hook up to the macbook and auto import still works on its master catalog.
so i call adobe and after much waiting on the phone, i was told to create a test account. i quickly set up my settings, grabbed a pic off the internet and put it into my watched folder and it DOES auto import.
i was told that this was an OS problem and that somewhere along the way some permissions got out of whack.
so before i call apple, i dug around and see that i have disk utility, which is what i need and i run the repair permissions program. i go through my routine that started doing, which was just dragging a tiny jpeg into the watched folder, but it still WONT import and i get the message i mentioned before.
i call apple to see if im missing something about repairing permissions. the (very nice) tech support guy walked me through several steps to try and remove the preferences folder to the desktop. for some reason, thats still unclear to me, it wouldnt move, but would only copy...
anyway, one of the things we did was remove the com.adobe.Lightroom2.plist file to try and get rid of the preferences to see if that would reset anything. it did seem to reset prefs, but it DID NOT fix the problem. the apple guy couldnt think of anything else, since he wasnt familiar with lightroom. his only suggestion was to call adobe back and double check that we werent missing anyplace were some sort of preferences were. apparently we didnt.
so, then it became workaround time for the photoshoot that was rapidly approaching yesterday.
i decided to run lightroom from my "test" account which seemed to work just fine. i went about bringing my big catalog over, opening it and importing my develop presets. i run a quick test and get the error message! what the heck?!?!
then i had an idea. i logged back into my real account. opened lightroom and created a NEW catalog and ran my little test and YES it DID work. in fact i took several test shots even using my camera. everything worked as it should.
it SEEMED that my master catalog held the key...or problem, in this case.
then photoshoot time came...that didnt go smoothly at first, but thats only because i started to realize the extent of my problems with my cameras loose connection. eventually scrapped tethered shooting for the evening and left my auto import problems alone for the night.
today came and i wanted to see if my "master" catalog was the problem as i had previously speculated. i moved it over to my macbook pro, loaded it up and auto import works there WITH the master catalog.
so thats how i arrive at my summation here...
i7 imac + user account + master LR cat = NO auto import
i7 imac + test account + new catalog = YES auto import
i7 imac + test account + master catalog = NO auto import
i7 imac + user account + new catalog = YES auto import
mbp + user account + old catalog = YES auto import
mbp + user account + master catalog = YES auto import
any ideas? is this a LR problem or an OS X problem?
