Hi all,

When working in the develop module for some time LR2 just freezed up (i.e. the hour glass appeared although it consumed no CPU cycles). After waiting some 45 minutes I stopped the application.

When starting it up again LR showed me a small dialog box saying "Assertion Failed" and an OK button, and opened with a limited menu system and no catalog opened. It is catalog specific since the other catalogs still open fine.

Anybody any suggestions, I really would like to see a half days work of develop work saved .

(I am on a Windows system, and tried all the usual stuff (repair installation, restart, etc.).

Thanx, Wilko

Have you tied testing the integrity of the catalog when opening it?

I just experienced the exact same problem. :( I just converted over both a LR 1.4 and LR 2 beta catalog to the new release, and haven't done too much except some keyword altering. But this makes me very nervous about the new LR2 release.

I also get the "assertion failed!" message when I open Lightroom2. I cannot access my new catalog or any of its pictures, so I do not know how to test the integrity of the new catalog. I am able to open the default LR2 catalog that was transferred over from my trial version of LR1.4, but I created a new catalog in order to correct file locations that were incorrect in the default catalog. I spent many hours working in the new catalog without difficulty, but now I fear that all the work is lost.

I was last using the Slideshow module in LR2, but Lightroom2 tries to open in the Develop module, even though I have never used it yet. When I go to the Slideshow module, I get another message: "?:': attempt to index a nil value".

Which catalog was the issue with? the 1.4 catalog, or the V2 catalog (or both?)

For me it was a v1.4 catalog that LR2 automatically converted when it first opened. I then imported some files into this catalog from the v2 Beta catalog I had.

Let's rule out catalog corruption before we go any further then (and welcome to the forum!!)

Try holding down Ctrl (Win) / Opt (Mac) while starting LR, and let it create a new catalog. If that works, we can go from there.

Thanks for the welcome! Creating a new catalog worked fine: LR opened up everything looked good. However, opening the troublesome catalog immediately after brought up the same "assert" error.

Ok, in your nice clean catalog, try going to File > Import from Catalog and see if it'll let you import it. Do a small chunk at a time, because you may be able to figure out where the corruption is.

I created the new catalog as you suggested, and everything is working fine. Is all of the work that I did in the old catalog lost? Since I am new to Lightroom, I wonder if I should expect catalog corruption to occurs every now and then? Probably I should back up the catalog every time I do any substantial work in Lightroom. (I did not have a backup of the catalog that became corrupted.)

Thank you for your help, and thanks for the welcome to the forum!

Bill

Hi Bill

Catalogs do get corrupted, so it's worth running backups. Lightroom has a backup system which will create a duplicate of the catalog in a named/dated folder, so you could set that to do a backup on a daily/weekly basis.

Now, in your nice fresh new catalog, try going to File > Import from Catalog and pointing to your corrupted catalog. If it'll let you, import just one folder at a time in the dialog box. You may be able to transfer most if not all of the settings that way.

Hi all,

sorry for the slow response (was travelling back home).

One suggestion was to check the integrity of the catalog: I did that and it checked out OK.

BTW, I have been using LR since it first came out and never experienced this before, so I still have confidence in the program. It's just that I would like to recover a half days work and I hate to redo creative work (as opposed to for instance database clean-up or management activities).

The thing I did not try yet is import the broken catalog into a newly created. I'll do that later and let you know the results.

I also just issued a bug report at Adobe, maybe they will come up with a solution or suggestion.

Regards,

Wilko

I got round this same issue. I had my main catalog updated during the first launch of LR2, but yesterday tried opening another old catalog (from 1.4) which hadn't been updated yet. It re-launched LR as normal but a quick message flashed on the screen and off again before I had chance to read it. No way would it open the old catalog. Eventually I found a work around:

Open/Create a new catalog, then go to File, Import from Catalog, and choose the old catalog. LR then migrates this old catalog to a new (v2 compatible ) one, putting it in the same folder as the original - then you get the import dialog with thumbs as usual. You can then skip the import as you already have the updated catalog sitting beside the old one, so just open the updated catalog and hey presto!

Cheers, Paul

Hi,

importing the corrupted catalog into a newly created catalog partially did the trick. All the edit work in the development module was recovered. This was the most valuable to me.

At the end of the import LR reported an error in importing a Collection that was having incompatible type. That was exactly the Collection holding the images I had edited. So the develop settings were recovered but the collection was lost. The only thing left now is to try to get the complete selection back.

BTW, now that I know that it has something to do with the Collection does anybody have any idea what I can do with that information??

So partially satisfied, I will let you know if Adobe comes up with a more definitive solution.

Greetz,

Wilko

Stac, you got this fixed in the end, right?

same thing for me

Hello,

Victoria - I had exactly the same problem and followed your advice and it worked - thank you very much - however I would echo others in saying that I don't want to risk many hours of work if the Lightroom is prone to crash like this

That's great to hear Chris. Welcome to the forum!

Lightroom doesn't *usually* crash like this, you'll be pleased to hear! And there are fixes when it does. Hang around here and you'll pick up loads of great tips.

Assertion Error

Hi, I am new to the forum, having just found you after trying to research an Assertion Error problem I am having.

The tips I have tried so far, with no success are:
Moving the catalog as associated files to another folder on my hard drive

Trying the same catalog on a different computer with LR2

Importing the corrupt catalog into a new catalog.

So far, I have been able to import the old catalog, including my edits, but when I want to export or work on a file, it says the file is missing...so it is not really fixed.

Any ideas? As a Wedding photographer, this would be a deal killer for me using LR2 anymore. All that work...gone.

Thanks in advance,
jeff

Have you tried to relink the images? It's not clear exactly what it was that you moved, in the second paragraph up above. If you moved the actual image files, the new (apparently functional?) catalog needs to know where to find them. If question marks are appearing on the folders or images, Either right-click on a folder with a question mark, or single-click on the question mark on a thumbnail, for a prompt to open a browser window to re-locate the unlinked files.

If that doesn't help, tell us more.

To Brad

Thanks Brad. I appreciate the tip.
Actually, I moved the LR2 Catalog to a different folder. Then tried to launch it. Some folks have had success with that. I am not one of them.

I will post a screen shot and more data when I get home tonight.
Thanks again.
