Aspect option in crop tool

What does this thing do?
 
Do you want a stripe 6 units wide by 1 unit high like for a panorama? Do you want a square image 1 unit wide by 1 unit high? There you go...
 
It allows you to set the proportions of the crop to whatever relationship (aspect ratio: width vs. height) you wish, or you can use one of the common ones provided.
 
Since LR never twiddles the pixels until export time, crop aspect ratio (width vs height) as Ralph and Denis note, is used, instead of the more familiar 'crop dimensions' (inches, cms, etc.) because at this point, the image doesn't really have dimensions.
