I'm on a Mac with all current drivers, monitor calibration and etc. I am finding very unreliable results printing in Light Room 3. Sometimes I get a good print and other times not. Usually it's darker than I anticipated. I have started going out to PS, soft proof and either save a tif into LR to print, or print from PS and then save the tif into the LR catalog. Both work equally well and give very reliable quality and expected results using my monitor. Am I missing something additional that provides better reliability when printing in LR?

How are you calibrating your monitor Jonathan, which Canon printer, how recent are the drivers, running LR in 32 or 64 bit, and do you find the same with LR2?

That's a lot of questions Victoria!
Imac calibrated with Spider 2/Coloreyes 9'/65/2.2
Epson 38'' with the newest drivers
LR 64bit and I haven't tried LR2 because I never had it. I just decided to move from MediaPro to LR. The printing using PS soft-proofed is really very good and reliably matches my monitor. The tif saved into LR is the same spot on and prints just as good as the one form PS. I really think it's the inability to have an original and soft-proof version to compare and adjust that is the problem.

And a great job answering them!

I'd try switching LR to 32 bit, just to rule that out.

And then, what settings are you using, both in LR and in the Print dialog?

Because we're talking about the beta, it's a bit of an unknown quantity at the moment. I'd be inclined to suggest downloading the trial of LR2 just to narrow down where it's going wrong, but that's up to you.

The only settings that have even the remotest connection, if that, would be the File Handling-Standard Preview Size = 2'48 (I am using a 24" Imac), Preview Quality = medium. Under Print I'm using Resolution=36' (recommended for the 38''), Sharpening=Standard, Type = Glossy (Ultra Premium Luster), 16 bit output, Color Management = Pro38 PLPP (Epson Luster), Intent = Relative. I alway turn off Printer color management in the driver, etc.
I just did a few prints moving between 32 and 64 bit, relative-perceptual, and 16 bit on and off. Absolutely no differences.

Epson Luster and Ultra Premium Luster may need quite different profiles! Last month, using Epson Archival Matte, I picked up a profile I did for an almost identical paper wanting to save on time and paper. The result was way off and I lost time and paper as a result. So I made the profile for the Archival Matte and it went out perfect!

You're preempting my questions now Jonathan!

I haven't done much printing, so I'll yield to anyone else with bright ideas. If you haven't already, might be worth double checking Eric Chan's instructions: http://people.csail.mit.edu/ericchan/dp/Epson38''/printworkflow.html although they apply to LR2 so we still haven't ruled out the possibility of it being a LR3 beta bug.

Well, as you say it sometimes work, my next port of call is that you write on paper each driver/Lightroom settings you use each time and compare. If still different results with very same settings, then it can be a bug...
