I have the model for the Nikon Z Series.

I Had the Solmeta and of course it no longer fit my Z. And the Battery stopped charging. I like it better for two reasons. First it fits on my camera with no dangly cords. Second even though it uses the camera battery for power, I don't notice the drain. There is a three position switch on the GPS — Off, On with Camera, and Always on. On with Camera is nice as I don't need to remember to turn it on/off in addition to turning the Camera on or off. With the Solmeta I was always forgetting and either lost GPS Positions or drained the battery of the Solmeta and had no GPS when I needed it.

My Solmeta is a different model from yours, but I'll bet that the overall design is the same. My Solmeta uses the 10-pin data connection, and so it works on my Z8.

Agree. Also one of my reason for asking about the Dawntech model.

My Solmeta GPS was always draining the battery on my D3, so much so that I would remove the battery in between uses.

I like the idea of the 3 position switch.

Your comments have clinched my decision to get this Dawntech unit. Do you remember if you bought it directly from the Dawntech site or from a US online store?

I bought it from DawnTech. It took about 10 days to arrive

Cletus,

I ordered the Eco Pro 2 from Dawntech yesterday, from their website.

Interesting how this company started out in Hong Kong, but relocated to the UK in 2020. Wonder why? :)

Probably political. I'm guessing that the actual product is still being made in China.

IIRC, this is the second GPS that I have ordered from the company. Perhaps 10 years ago before I got a Solmeta, I ordered a GPS that attached to the 10 pin connector of my (then) Nikon, It was awful. It often would not lock on enough satellites to give a location. It was always on draining the Camera Battery (which then was not as efficient as the Nikon Batteries available today. and even when the camera was off). Because it connected directly to the 10 pin port in front, It was difficult to take on and off.

While I'm on the subject of Batteries, you might be interested in this rechargeable Nikon battery that requires not dedicated charger.

I wasn't aware of this battery, but I have 3 SmallRig batteries for my Z8, also with a USB C port for charging outside of the camera. Very convenient feature.
