I'm planning around with the new Super Resolution in 10.3. I just blew up a 6000x4000 NEF file to a 12000x8000 DNG. The original NEF was 27MB. The DNG is 370MB. All ok.

Microsoft reports my NEF as being an image of 6000x4000. It says the DNG is 1024x683. Weird.

Looking at the EXIF Data for the DNG, I find 3 sub-types under SubIFD
  • Full-resolution Image; 6016x4014
  • Enhanced image data; 12032x8032
  • Reduced-resolution image;1024x683. This seems to be what Windows is reporting.
Wondering why Windows is getting confused or if it's just reporting the last SubIFD it finds.

Thoughts?

A clue. The sub-type of "Reduced-resolution image;1024x683." has a tag for "PreviewApplicationName =Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Classic". The other sub-types don't have a PreviewApplicationName.

Do you normally convert NEFs to DNGs? If not, do a few conversions and then repeat the EXIFData review for both the NEFs and the DNGs.

Out of curiosity, do you Super Resolution DNGs also contain the original NEFs?

The original data is , indeed, held in the DNG file (so it can be used again in future if needed). This is part of the reson other software is confused on the sizing of the file.

Check your Classic books, 2nd Edition, Appendix F6 for further details.
