Sorry, no Monty Python jokes here!
When I first started to use LR, I was a little lazy to use keywords. I opted to utilize the collections on the left panel. So, I had Polar bears, humpback whales, Botswana safari, etc collections on the left side.

I saw the "light" when reading someone's 12',''' images. I said to myself I better use keywords since my numbers are on the low side. I took the spray paint can and added keywords. I could not help but notice- all my nice collections disappeared. I can see all the keywords on the right side- I know all the images are there. Is it normal to lose your initial collection when building keywords list? In other words, you cannot have both collections on the left panel and keywords list on the right using the same images?

Bob, I can't recall which LR version you are using but there should be no problem.
Keywords and collections are not connected unless you have smart collections that recognise a keyword or keywords to add files to the smart collection.
I don't know what happened to your collections though, sounds funny!

p.s. I have a 15mm too, looking forward to getting more use out of it with a D7'' arriving shortly....... have had the lens for maybe 2' years!! Ain't Nikon great!!

Not as funny as Monty Python!!!
It seems odd that my collection disappeared. I am using keywords list which is more efficient way of doing things.

Bob- the slide shooter at heart( boy, that 15mm is hard to use; your shadows and/ or your feet gets in the picture!) Yes, I am a hard core Nikon shooter.

Try the 1'.5 Bob!! Feet first.
Have you tried Smart Collections?

Ok- I experimented with one image in the Smart collection. Yes, indeed, it worked.
So, you can only use Smart collections along the Keyword list together but you cannot use the "plain" collection with the keyword list.

That seems a little strange.

No worries,

Bob, what you're saying, sounds just a little off. Can you tell us a little more exactly what you mean, when you say the keywords and collections can't coexist?

Clearly, you can't select a collection on the left hand panel, and then on the right hand panel click on the right pointing arrow on a keyword, which then changes the view entirely from collection to keyword oriented. Is that what you mean?

Is your objective to identify photos with a given keyword in a given collection?

If so, first select a collection, and then use the filter bar at the top to narrow down the view to photos with given keyword(s).

Forgive me if I'm confusing the issue, I'm just trying to read between the lines of question, and see where you're trying to get to.

Geoff has good advice for going forward with smart collections, but if you already have some existing 'dumb' collections, just try filtering them.

Brad,

Go back to my original observation. I had organized some collections( not the smart ones)humpbacks, polar bears, air shows, etc. But, I decided to use keywords instead since it is better way to find images. After applying the keywords, I noticed my collections disappeared- blank! But, all my images are on the keyword list.
So, I was just asking if this is normal or not. I am a little bummed out that I have wasted time putting those collections together but overall I will come out ahead using the keywords.

See, that's why I asked. If I understand what your'e saying, No, disappearing collections are not normal.

You should be able to switch back and forth,
1) Show me all the pictures in this Collection on the Left Hand side,
2)show me all the pictures with this Keyword on the right hand side.
3)Show me some combination with the Left hand side and the Filter Bar.

The previous collections are completely gone?

Sounds like you want me to do screen shots. I have yet done a screen shot. You can ask Don Ricklin about this subject.( previous thread)

But seriously, I am doing yard work and the winter days are getting shorter so I am running back and forth from the yard to the computer. This will explain the delayed response from me. On one of my real breaks, I will attempt to do a screen shot. I know a picture is worth a thousand words.

Go finish the garden Bob! We'll still be here!

Brad,

I am still having problems doing screen shots.

But, I am fine with the keyword list. Knowing that the "dumb" collection has disappeared is not normal is all I wanted to know. I have no intention to make this an issue.

Thanks,

Probably should be a tip or a FAQ somewhere, huh?

Great minds Brad! Now you go check your other thread.... :D

I am trying to do a quote like what Victoria did in previous message. I click on quote button on quick response but nothing happened. Am I missing a step or two here? And, I do not see any quote options on this window.

If you click the blue quote button at lower right of the post to be quoted, the contents should all appear in the text entry box, with html tokens surrounding it, which tell the software how to display it. You can edit it to cut out extraneous material.

There's also a quote button on the text entry box toolbar, looks like a cartoon speech balloon. Any text inserted between the html tokens that creates, will be set off as a quote, but will be lacking the 'username' attribution.

You know, I've never tried that check box under the quick response text entry. I don't know what it does.

Try it the other way with the blue button at lower right.
