After a photo class this weekend, I purchased and downloaded LR 2 on my Mac Pro. After install, I receive the above message. Tried the install on my mac book, and same result. Loaded LR 3 beta 2 same thing. After reading a blog somewhere, I set up a new user on my MB and LR 2 works as a different user. Tried reloading LR 2, deleting prefs, file permissions etc - no luck.

Any ideas on how to identify the problem? I'm not really interested in a clean install of Snow Leopard and reload of all my software, everything else works fine. I'd rather just stick with aperture. But I use ACR a lot, and integrated workflow would be a big help...

Thx in advance for any ideas.

It must be something installed on your machines that is causing the problem. Download the 1'.6.3 Combo update from Apple and install that. That will replace a lot of the OS libraries and if your really lucky it will fix it. Failing that a re-install may be the only option unless you decide to stick with Aperture.

Re-installing Snow Leopard (+ updates) over the top of your current system means keeping all your settings and installed software intact so it's not as bad it may first seem.

I'm interested to know what you use ACR for instead of Aperture, I have both also and still find it difficult to decide which one to use.

Ok, so it's working in the other user account ok still?

Then you should be able to copy the appropriate files over the your usual account and it work. There seems to be some kind of permissions issue that the installer hits from time to time, but no one's been able to provide enough information to replicate it reliably to fix it.

The main files you want to copy over from your clean account to your usual account appear to be:

Macintosh HD / Users / [your username] / Library / Preferences / com.adobe.Lightroom3Beta.plist (and/or the LR2 version)
Macintosh HD / Users / [your username] / Library / Application Support / Adobe / Lightroom /
and possibly a clean catalog
Macintosh HD / Users / [your username] / Photos / Lightroom / Lightroom 3 Catalog.lrcat

and if you can figure out which of those files does the trick, I'd love you forever!

Ok, so here is what I found out.

1. I set up a new user account and installed Lightroom 3 Beta. and verified it worked. I went over to my main account and verified I got the same error message.
2. I checked the files in the structure Victoria outlined in my main account and checked against the new account:

a. Macintosh HD / Users / [your username] / Library / Preferences / com.adobe.Lightroom2.plist
b. Macintosh HD / Users / [your username] / Library / Preferences / com.adobe.Lightroom2LSSharedFileList.plist
c. Macintosh HD / Users / [your username] / Library / Application Support / Adobe / Lightroom /
d. Macintosh HD / Users / [your username] / Photos / Lightroom / Lightroom 3 Catalog.lrcat


Items a, b and d were fine. On the account that wasn't working, the file structure under c was incomplete. There was only a folder:

External Editor Presets
--Viveza 2.lrtemplate

When I looked at the new account file structure there was a lot more.

3. I copied the entire file structure from the new accunt into my main account. LR 3 beta worked fine.

4. Copied same process after I loaded LR 2 into new user account and LR 2 also works.

Everything seems to be working (at least the dialogues) I haven't had time to actually load pics and test. When I get some time, I'll load my Nik filters in since this may be part of the issue since I used Nik in Photoshop before I bought Lightroom.

I have no idea why the installer didn't work right or give an error message to the contrary...

Adobe needs to get this fixed. Most people would just stay with Aperture as soon as they saw this error message.

Declared victory too soon...

Still get the same error when attempting to change modules. Should have checked that.

Back to square one..

Went back in and deleted all the relevant files and folders. When deleting the .../Application Support/Adobe/Lightroom folder I was asked for Admin confirmation.

Restarted machine, and reinstalled LR 3 beta. Now it works. I still think it is some type of permissions on this folder from the install of the Nik filters I have used previously, but someone who better understands the internals would need to confirm.

But, not declaring victory yet
