Always importing both Raw + jpeg

Hello everyone,

before I start I'd like to mention that I did a search on this problem and couldn't find anything. If I have missed a topic that answer my question please let me know.

I have recently changed PC from Win XP to Win 7 64 bits Ult. Before the switch everything was working fine. Since I moved my stuff to the new machine LR (2.6) always imports RAW + jpeg separately. I have checked that the option to treat the two type of files separately is unchecked, I tried to check/uncheck and reboot without any luck. One thing to note, my jpegs are save on a HCSD and my RAW on a CF and this hasn't changed between the move

Please let me know where I can find more info or even better if anyone knows a fix!

Well, it seem that Lightroom is not considering both as duplicates. When you import, is "Don't re-import suspected duplicates checked? ::)

Hi Mark,

yes I did, I removed the file from LR and PC then I re-imported from device. I'm gonna try with the do not import duplicates, although I wonder what's the point of having the treat as separate option if you also need this one checked.

Ok I've tried with and without both option (duplicate and treat separately) and I always get the same result: Raw (NEF) + jpeg in my catalog. Any other idea what could be causing this?

How are you importing? From the CF card in a card reader? From camera connected by USB cable? From local hard drive? And what exactly is in the folder being imported, as seen in Windows Explorer?

I'm sorry I was sure I had mentioned this. but it seems that I forgot.

- I use "Import from device"
- I have a D3''S with two memory slot SD/CF where my jpegs are saved on the SD card and my Raw on the CF card
- In Win 7 Explorer I see two different removable storage with same folder inside
- In Win XP Explorer I can't see anything anymore from my camera... (rebooted PC and Camera) but I think it was only seeing one removable storage but why would one detect one card and the other one 2?
- I tried the option to ignore Camera generated folder... same thing
- If I upload from a single folder on a disk it seem to be working fine

It's nice to have a back-up on a different card and also having both jpegs and NEFs in the same folder and managed by LR. I hope I can find a solution.

Something a bit odd that I just realized is that Win 7 can preview my NEF files from my Camera but not from my HDDs...

[/quote]I think because your images are not co-located on the same device (card) LR does not see them as a RAW file + sidecar JPEG. The JPEG file does not have the same name as the NEF even though the non extension part of the name is the same. I believe that Nikons are unique in that they support two different cards in the camera. Other mfgs only have a slot for one card. I think if you put the NEFs and JPEGs in the same folder on the card, LR will Import the JPEGs as sidecar files. Still that does not explain how XP managed to behave differently.

Yes, it's the combination of the two-card system and reading straight from the camera that's the problem. It should probably be filed as a bug (there's a link at the top of the page to the official bug report form).

In the meantime, what do you want to accomplish? If you want to read only the raw files, then the simple solution is to pull out the SD card before importing from the camera, or read just the CF card from a card reader.

Mark, Denis and Clee,

Thank you for all the help and suggestion. I think I'll end-up either copying the files on my HDD first or just dropping the jpegs. I'll make sure to report this as a big/missing feature to Adobe and perhaps they'll be able to include it in LR3.x

From tour 1rst post I immediately taught about a D3. It is just that I am surprised that the second import of the JPEGs are not considered as side cars or duplicates. Two things you can do meanwhile aside from copying both cards to a folder first:

1- Set the D3''S to write both raws and JPEGs to the same card and automatically switch to second when full.

2- Import only the raw files in Lightroom and just copy the JPEGs with Explorer at the same place where you imported the raws. Lightroom will react normally telling you that your images are raw+JPEG.

He Denis,

The reason why I have set the jpeg on one card and raw on the other is to create a failsafe in case one of the two card breaks, but for the time being I might have to do that and to no rename my files while importing but doing it after. Thanks for the ideas!

HAHA! There may be the culprit if you renamed at import. Yes, you can try (F2) to rename with the same naming template after import...
