I understand that light room does not alter the originals. It keeps changes as data. But after I edit in PS3 and save LR actually saves the retouched photo to disk as a flattened file. Is this the way LR manages jpg files? If not is there something I am missing as I load the photo to PS3 from LR? I am trying out the program for the first time.

Armand, when LR sends PSD files to PS and you work on them and save them it is PS that saves them and then LR imports them to the catalog. LR does not have layers so does not view them. All changes made in LR are stored in the catalog and can be written to the files with a preference setting in either the header of the file for PSD, jpeg, DNG, TIFF or as xmp sidecar files for camera manufacturers raw files.

Hope that helps

Okay, thanks. Let's see if I got it: when I edit a file in PS3 and save it, PS creates a new file with the "edit" extension. LR puts that into the catalog and now I have two files on my HD with all metadata showing in LR. Second, xmp only writes setting for camera manufacturers raw files nor dng.

Second, xmp only writes setting for camera manufacturers raw files nor (typo? not?) dng.

Sort of.

Just restating what Geoff said earlier, XMP can be written for every filetype that LR handles. For camera raw files, that data is written in a companion 'sidecar' file with filetype *.xmp. For all of the other types (PSD,TIFF, JPG, DNG), the XMP can be written, and is embedded in the actual image file.

Whether the XMP is actually written, is optional, and can be triggered manually, or set to write automatically.

CS4 works the same way. Just started using it with Lightroom since it is so easy. One interesting thing is that if I open the image as a Smart Object in Photoshop, when Photoshop saves it the file maintains it's layers - it doesn't seem to flatten the file. Based on very limited use!!! This is hugely helpful if you have to go back to Photoshop to re-edit...

There is another problem which I thought was due to PSD versions. The only way I can edit in PSD is to use the "second editor" option. All other possibilities the me LR can not open PS - even if ti is open. Clearly a communication error between programs. Is ther a way to correct the problem? Until I get this working right, I will be working with one hand tied behind my back -so to speak, because I relie on PS heavilly.

PS to my previous note: I 've tried most of the suggestions in other threads: Chaning LR preference file names to reload; Reinstalling PS3;
