After Edit in PS, LR performs Auto Tone

Hi,

I have LR configured to auto-tone my images automatically when I import them (raw from a Canon 35'D).

Which I'm quite happy with most of the time.

However, I have a problem when working with images in CS2 that are also in my LR catalog.

When I have a shot that I want to do extra work on in CS2, and choose Edit in CS2, this obviously causes LR to create a TIF (or PSD) and then open that file in CS2. LR automatically stacks that TIF with the associated raw.

When I've happily finished editing the TIF, and have returned to LR, LR then unfortunately auto-tones the TIF, usually causing the exposure settings for the TIF as displayed in LR to become somewhat inaccurate.

Everything is fine if I then go into the Develop module and hit "Reset Tone".

My question is whether there is a way to e.g. configure LR to only auto-tone raw images, or another way to prevent it auto-toning images that I've edited in CS2?

Or should I just accept this as a limitation of choosing to automatically auto-tone images on import?

Have a look at the settings under menu > Edit > Preferences > Presets tab, first item at top, 'Apply Auto tone adjustments', and make sure it's disabled.

I haven't actually tried this, so I don't know if this setting applies to 're-imports' from PS returns.

Other than this, or an accidental preset hiding in the bushes somewhere, I can't think of anything else that would cause the symptoms.

Thanks for the reply.

Yeah, I have the auto-tone setting enabled, since I find it somewhat useful to auto-tone my raw files on import.
I was sort of hoping that I could get LR to differentiate between import of "new" (and hence untoned) raw images, and the "import" of the PS returns as you call them (which, if you like, have already been toned when I originally developed them in LR prior to editing in PS).
If I can't do that, then yeah, I'll accept that I have to turn off the "Apply auto tone adjustments" setting.

I don't know how much effort it's worth to you, but:

If you don't do a lot of preset application during the original import, it's not that hard to build an 'auto-tone' only preset (or add auto-tone to existing presets), which you could apply with the Import Dialog. You could then disable the auto-tone preference, which would solve the other problem.
