Oops. I did that last night. I always do a pre-cull using Canon’s DPP and then drag what’s left into a folder on the desktop so I should be OK. I will check a few things out tonight.

Works OK off the desktop.

If DPP uses PTP also, you might be SOL.

I didn't think of that with my desktop test. Just tried it. DPP was able to read/open the files. Thanks

Adobe doesn't provide a lot of detail in their article, but the workarounds all involve avoiding the use of PTP in LR, that is, selecting import sources in the the Files section rather than the Devices section of the Source column. You can probably still use a USB cable connected to a device, provided it presents itself as a file system (like an SD card or USB memory stick, aka MSC) rather than as a PTP device. Many manufacturers no longer provide the MSC option, though.

I was not familiar with the MSC acronym, but according to a quick web search, MSC means Mass Storage Class, which I think means it’s the same thing I have seen on some camera menus that call that option USB Mass Storage.

Right. MSC/Mass Storage presents the same as an SD card or USB memory stick with a FAT file system. Historically, there have been far fewer bugs reported with using MSC with cable-connected devices than PTP. One gets the feeling that Adobe and Apple would prefer that PTP-connected devices would just go away.

This is all very depressing.

I use BeyondCompare (BC) to back up media cards in the field… but found out yesterday BC was suddenly not preserving the time stamps…. vital for normal BC operations and other aspects of my travel workflow.

I am currently on a trip, needed this to work… so sent an urgent support ticket and got the following response.

“In macOS 13, Apple changed the drivers used for ExFat file systems. The buggy driver prevents Beyond Compare and other applications from reliably preserving modified timestamps. This is a bug that Apple introduced with macOS 13 and it is still not fixed in macOS 14.“

I need to understand better (ie recognise) when Lr is using PTP or other protocols.

[I have had a problem using MatLab on Mac which fails to recognise what is a hidden/system folder on SD cards…. this might be a clue to this issue also].

It has been reported that CFExpress cards do not show as camera cards which can invoke Lightroom when inserted. Does this relate to the PTP/MSC issue?

I doubt it. This seems a new bug, otherwise the advise not to update would not make sense. The issue of CFExpress cards seen as external disks is not a really a bug, and it has existed for much longer.

Will this issue impact importing to Lightroom Classic using a CFExpress card installed in a card reader and attached to a Thunderbolt port on a MacStudio?

I don’t think so. The problem is that the card is not shown under Devices. That is the old place and in practice it is actually not even used (except if you connect a phone, which only shows there). The card also shows under Files, and that is where it is used nowadays (because that is faster). I think CFExpress cards always only show under Files.

...or connect a camera with a USB cable, if the camera doesn't support MSC (e.g. Canons).

I would like Adobe and Apple to address this with alacrity. The macOS Sonoma 14.2 security update addresses multiple security vulnerabilities across various components, including Accessibility, AppleEvents, Bluetooth, and WebKit, improving state management, memory handling, and data redaction. Many issues were reported by security researchers and identified by CVE-IDs. See HT214036.

I want to apply these security patches ASAP.

You can safely upgrade to 14.2. You just need to recognize the PTP/MSC issue may (will) prevent you from importing directly from the Camera card. There is at least one work around . You can copy the camera card contents to your local drive and import into Lightroom. Another work around is what I do. I use my iPadPro and Lightroom as a front-end to LrC. AFAIK, there is no PTP/MSC issue with iPadOS

I understand Apple’s public beta of 14.3 does fix it, but I don’t have a date yet. I’ve gone ahead and updated my machines, as the workarounds for import aren’t a big deal.

Breaking news! I’ve just heard that Apple has just released Sonoma 14.2.1, which is said to fix the reported issues with device connections into Lightroom
