Adjustment Brush Problem - "Speckling"?

I've had a scout around and haven't found anyone else report this one, so here goes.


A bit of a mystery at the moment and frustrating, but to give it a name I've called it 'speckling' for the sake of a term.


I'm running LR2.4 on a Mac Pro in 64 bit.


So I flagged the picks from a job and filtered on them and went to work as usual. Each one now has 2 snapshots, the difference in them is that after all developing I made a snapshot, I then cloned out a logo on a t-shirt and created the second snapshot.


Each image had some adjustment brush work, say between 3 and 7 separate new pins such as soften skin, some exposure, brightness..


The trouble is that when I returned to some of them they were 'speckled', and opening the adjustment brush section and hovering over some of the pins, they showed the area(s) I had worked on, plus loads of extra 'speckles'. And this carries to the exported image too. Of images affected (not all of them), seems that one of the snapshots is fine, the other shows the symptoms.


I have no option but to note what I did, delete that pin (or those pins) and do it (them) again.

Confusingly... I've reviewed the images again (another pass of exporting with different settings) and this time a different image shows this problem, where previously it didn't.

Wow, that's weird. So you didn't put all those spots there? Does anything show in History? My initial thought was that they've been synced from another file.

Maybe you've had the brush's auto mask switched on when you didn't need it?

Maybe I did meticulously plan all those spots Victoria - it's the new Art LOL :)

Thing about syncing from another file is that the area I worked on is present - exactly that area - plus all the other specks. History doesn't show anything untoward. Most of the areas/pins were one long continuous 'paint' with my mouse (left button kept held down all the time until I released it) so it wouldn't correspond to - for example - individual short or quick brush strokes and each one causing a randomized spot i.e. mouse on/off click.

Also - none of my images had that kind of granular work done on them, i.e. healing or cloning or fixing small localized areas/spots. The half dozen or so pins per pic were clear areas such as face or skin, background, t-shirt etc.

This reminds me of the previous AB tool issue of those jumping lines that eventually got fixed.

Have a bit of RSI at the mo so not spending too much time in front of the computer. I plan to revisit those mics & maybe some other test images to see if I can find a way of reproducing it as it seems bizarre & random right now. Might be in a better position to put a bug report in if I can substantiate it more.
Edit - John thanks but no I don't use Auto Mask at all and remember noting that it is not checked.

My first thoughts were the same as Johns... Are you using DNG or the CR2 ? I would try copying and renaming the underlying CR2 and import it again and then edit it to see if the metadata/xmp has a problem.

I had this same problem. I fixed it simply by going to the History in Development and backing up one step ( the speckling disappears) and then going back to the last history move and the speckling is gone.

I have the EXACT same problem when using the adjustment brush to correct multiple parameters. I do a lot of work in conferences, theatres, etc, where projected image exposure/colour balance has to be brought into line with those for speakers and performers who are stage or strobe lit, so I get this problem a lot, and it was the reason I joined LRforums...
Turning off the auto mask has solved it 1''%. Thank you! From frustrated to sorted in 5 minutes flat. You're a legend! :D
