Adjustment Brush and Selections: Viveza? Color Range tool?

I've been using LR a lot more lately and picking up on some of its nuances.

While I love the adjustment brush, it seems that LR really needs a color selection tool for the adjustment brush. For example, I was working on a photo of Hawaiian flowers that had a lot of white flowers in the background that needed some under exposing, (i.e. burning) It would take a long time with the adjustment brush, but something like the color range tool or Nik Viveza could do it pretty quickly.

any thoughts? Workaround suggestions?

There is a colour picker in the adjustment brush.

Click the little half-white box to the right of where it says 'Effect:' to open the 'advanced' settings. This lets you adjust any or all of the various functions for the same brush mask.

At the bottom is a box marked 'color'; click on the box to select the colour. It's not very sophisticated, but it might serve your needs. Please try it out and post back here with your experiences and comments.

Thanks for the response. It looks like the only think the color picker does is change the color of the mask that you brush on.

Nope. It definitely applies colour to the area you mask. Try something definite, like blue on some nice white cloud.

You can toggle to see the area of the mask by pressing 'O' (letter, not number) while in the Brush tool.

Now I'm confused. your right it's not changing the mask color. It seems to paint on the image. What its use is, I don't know.

Reid the purpose is to tone areas with the brush or the gradient tool. Shift-o cycles the colours of the mask, there are three varieties for different colour backgrounds, etc.

Reid, are you not using the Auto Mask setting?

Ah, I realise that my initial reply was off the mark. Having re-read your post I now understand what you are looking for; a way to select a particular colour, not a way to change a colour.

This relates to a recent request I posted re: auto masking in the brush tool. I agree with you that it needs improvement. It would be great to have a colour-related 'proximity' selection setting. Please send a request to Adobe; the more they get related to a particular feature, the faster it will get their attention.
