Firstly, I apologize if this is redundant, but I did use the search feature first!

I have a folder in LR with 33' images already imported. I want to add 1 image to that folder. How do I do this? I've tried dragging the image to the grid view of the folder, but the resulting dialog box wants to put the image in a different folder than my "target" folder.

Simply move/copy the image to the folder using Windows Explorer (if on a PC obviously) or similar.

Then, in LR, right-click on the folder and choose "Synchronise".
LR should then find the extra image in that folder, and offer to import it.

Hope this helps,

Is the image you want to add already imported somewhere in Lightroom? Did you just tryed to grag the new image from a file manager over the grid Lightroom not being maximized?

If already imported, do as Mark suggest as moving files around outside Lightroom is to be avoided.

The image(s) I want to add is NOT in Lightroom. I see how to move an image if it's already in LR. But dragging the image from my desktop (Macintosh, by the way) to the folder, or to the filmstrip does nothing.

Ah-Ha! The lightbulb came on somewhere.
Import the image, specify move to a new location and add to catalog is the answer!
I'll drink to that!

Thanks! And a big THANK YOU to everyone who gave help. Sometimes one has to morph into the program to see the answer.
